3. Buddy list just lets you find the PM link and profile for your friends

without having to search for one of their posts. Also if they have a DU journal, it gets added to the the Journal Tracker on your My DU.

Not really a very useful feature; I don't think many of us use it. (If you're asking about the mechanics of it, there's a button or icon on every post allowing you to add this user to your buddy list)
