I need help with this riddle (it'll make me look smart at the office)
I'll look really, really good at work if someone can help me out with this riddle...

A trip with no fall
from a 5 sided space
or a little golden ball
in a magical place

Thanks for your guesses, help and prognostications...

11. 5 sided space
Pentagon?

Trip with no fall... gotta be an Arizona vacation, since they have no concept of autumn out there.

Little golden ball? I'm thinking BBs.

So, it's very clear to me that what we have here is a riddle about Rumsfeld taking a trip to Arizona and being shot with a BB gun.

What do I win?

12. OK, a serious thought: a first-generation U.S. satellite.
Trip without a fall: Launched and never hit earth again.

5-sided place: The Pentagon, cuz the ARMY was in charge of our first
launches, and NASA is still a branch of the Defense Dept.

Golden ball/magic place: spherical satellite in orbit.

You might need to google for a US satellite that was ball-shaped;
the first one we launched was cylindrical. The Soviets used spherical
design for Sputnik 1, so we may have done the same at some point early on.

25. That's not NECESSARILY an operative in the 'either/or' sense.
At least, as far as I understand the traditinal riddle format, it isn't.

MOOT point, though- I still don't REALLY think my 'satellite'
answer is correct.
It just doesn't have that punchline-style PAYOFF
that you get from the answer to a good riddle.

It doesn't have that "Oh, of COURSE..." factor, y'know?

Edited on Fri Sep-15-06 04:50 PM by dicksteele
I'm not the one tryin' to get my hot coworker
out of her pants, y'know!

I've been in a great relationship for over 7 years now-
when I want some nasty, red-hot, howlin' MonkeyLove, I just
surprise her by cleaning the living room.
No need to go dragging RIDDLES into it.

Life is good.

32. OK, I'll offer you a seven-cents nickel.
Do you know what this country needs today?...A seven-cent nickel. Yessiree, we've been using the five-cent nickel in this country since 1492. Now that's pretty near a hundred years' daylight saving. Now, why not give the seven-cent nickel a chance? If that works out, next year we could have an eight-cent nickel. Think what that would mean. You could go to a newsstand, buy a three-cent newspaper and get the same nickel back again. One nickel carefully used would last a family a lifetime!

28. Let's try something else
The Golden Ball is a FIFA award that has been awarded to:

1982 Paolo Rossi
1986 Diego Maradona
1990 Salvatore Schillaci
1994 Romario
1998 Ronaldo
2002 Oliver Kahn
2006 Zinedine Zidane

A 5 sided space is what soccer balls used to be made off:

1st part of the riddle goes back a ways, but something we Dems should have gotten. I slapped my forehead and went "Duh!" when I saw it finally worked out!

Linda Tripp was a !!!!!Snitch!!!!!

Several of us were right about the other part

53. Explanation of my user name
I started working in the Datacenter at Mizzou in 1985. At the time we were called Campus Computing (makes sense, right?). We had to pick a user name that started with "cc". So I just added the initials of my first, middle, maiden, and married name at the time. Hence, ccjlld. Since I've been using it at work for over 20 years, I have a tendency to use it for other things.

BTW, since then our department has had 4 or 5 different names. The current is IATS, (Information and Access Technology Services), however, in the next year we will be changing our name once again to Mizzou IT.

Thanks for the welcome to the Lounge! I've been a lurker and sometimes poster for a long time!

First went to wikipedia and found this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallows_Pole

So then went looking for "The Golden Ball" fairy tale
http://www.mainlesson.com/display.php?author=steel&book=english&story=ball

and here:
http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/eng/meft/meft04.htm

A trip with no fall
(Saved from the hangman's noose)
From a five-sided space
(hmmmm...not sure)
Or a golden ball
(is in the story)
In a magical place
(more from the story)
