It is actually a genre in this fucked-up nation. Imagine horrible, no-talent hacks setting "I LOVE YOU GOD!!!11!!11!!" to the same damned melody.

5. Ah, okay
there was a concert in my city a year or so ago with CCM (the music, not the hockey sticks). I saw it on the news, and the music was rather...unappealing, I must say.

I don't think it's very popular here - definitely a niche market. I hope it stays that way (means less fundies).

12. Maybe because I was raised Catholic...
I feel that no religious music should have a back beat. Although I suppose gospel has it's place in the world...it's just not what I grew up hearing. I personally like a Catholic mass...somber and "church-y" so this CCM crap with the obligatory "raising my hands to Jeezus" makes me want to scream. When the media talks about music that spurs on violence, they are right...CCM makes me want to smash things

Well, I can't stand the overtly, obviously Christian music, especially the stuff that is really tastelessly done. I have nothing at all against artists who are Christian, only those who insist on making every line a reference to the glory of Jeebus, against the same repeated chords OVER and OVER again.

From age 5 or 6 until I left home, that shit was ALL I was allowed to listen to. Other types of music (even instrumental jazz) were BURNED, and no I'm not kidding!

It has already happened if you let 16 Horsepower in to the CCM category. They do psycho-billy Christianity, admittedly - but what glorious music!

Just wait. Someone will do something musically wonderful in CCM (whether Steely Dan fans like you and me will find it easy to admit or not ;) )

38. It was AJA for many years -
Then Katy Lied crept in, took the top spot and stayed. I like it for being less "pure" than AJA. It has more musical styles mixed in. Folkish and Carole Kingish things (in addition to the jazz and R&B consciousness they still have today). Things they never mixed into their music after Kayt Lied.

And I really like Two Against Nature as well--the title track, "Janie Runaway," "Cousin Dupree," "Almost Gothic," etc.

But my all-time favorite 'Dan track is "Deacon Blues." First 'Dan song I ever heard (and actually knew it was the 'Dan! :D), plus a really awesome subject matter = excellent song.

44. Wow! AWESOME!
:bounce:

I'm never sure which I like better, Fagen or Becker. I think Fagen is quirkier, but Becker is probably funnier in the accessible sense--all of Fagen's humor is extremely dark. But, of course, I like them together best of all, so I suppose it doeesn't really matter. ;)

I thought for sure someone would take pity on me and help me get to see SD ensemble in concert in Beantown this past August on the "Steelyard Sugartooth McDan" run, but, despite my not-so-snide hints, nobody did. :( :(

:D

I think this YouTube selection is a perfect example of Becker at his most amusing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gQRQxgOpCw

Actually, YouTube has some totally AWESOME 'Dan vids from Art Crimes and Sugartooth McDan, as well as a clip as a "Peg" introspective....Very cool. ;)

On the subject of darkness......despite how they look, It seems that Becker is the really, really dark one and Fagen the brighter one. Compare Fagens solo releases with becker's 11 tracks of Whack. You'll see what I mean immediately.

Thanks again.
