The San Diego Chargers

40-7 victory today over the Titans. The Titans only crossed mid-field 3 times, and their only score came with 2:51 left in the game, making San Diego the LAST team in the NFL to give up any points. Only the Bears have given up the same 7 points in 2 games, and the Chargers lead in sacks and fewest yards allowed. Fierce coverage, a linebacker worthy of Seau's legacy, and speed.

Plus, on offense, Phillip Rivers is working out nicely - and with a deep running game, they can score.

It's going to be a great season.

Especially on the Patriots. We obliterated them in MA last year, and we fielded a weaker defense than we do now. The Colts are overrrated, as always. Peyton Manning will be in for a rude awakening against the Chargers revitalized defense.

Even so, you predict only 4 losses, which is a respectable season. They are not to be underestimated this year.

I hope the Chargers do well. I have always liked them, especially when Flutie played for them (and even though they bombed in the Superbowl I was hoping to enjoy because I did not care who won). And the Dan Fouts/Kellen Winslow era was great too.

16. That was a shocking collapse

Whenever I saw the crawler on the screen with the updates, I was thinking "What the hell is going on?" I have seen the Chargers do that in seasons not so long ago, and it's the worst kind of loss imaginable.

13. I wouldn't get too excited yet.

The Titans and Raiders will be lucky to win more than six games between them. Tennessee was bad enough to make the Jets look competent last week, and the Raiders look like the 1976 Bucs. The history of the NFL is full of teams which started out 2-0 and didn't go anywhere; the Chargers might in fact do well, but no team in the NFL has had an easier schedule up to this point.

I have nothing against the Bolts, don't get me wrong, but blowing out two CFL-caliber teams is no reason to book playoff tickets this early.

15. All I am saying is...

Yes, those were two weak teams they defeated, but if you can't overpower those weak teams, if you can't dominate in every category over them, then you have no business competing with the stronger teams. These were dominating wins - I saw both games in their entirety, and they are very much improved over last year.

The only team in the AFC West predicted to finish better than the Chargers is Denver, and they stumbled out of the gate. So it is not unreasonable to believe that the Chargers can win the division or finish in second with a decent chance at the wild card - an 11-5 or 12-4 record. The 3 toughest opponents on their schedule are Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Cincinnati. Last year they handled the Colts and the Patriots quite effectively, and there is no reason they cannot do so again. I think as long as they avoid any serious injuries of their key players, develop a deeper passing game which keeps them from overelying on rushing, and keep their defensive prowess going, they have a reasonable shot at the postseason. I am not one who makes lofty or unrealistic predictions. No claims to a Super Bowl as of yet. :-)

17. The Chargers are one of those teams

who would be better served by a three game season, most years. Seems like they often start out well and vanish soon after the halfway point.

Congrats on beating Oakland and Tennessee. You can celebrate with the fourteen other teams that should beat each of them this season. :)

(Seriously, though, SD looked good. Maybe, just maybe, this year...)
