Cat lovers, please HELP! Nancy wants her cat back! Ideas needed...

Nancy lives in a small apartment house. Her cat is missing. She's pretty sure a crazy lady who lives nearby took it...

2008 says: how long has he been missing?

Nancy says: one week tomorrow

Nancy says: I put up flyers

Nancy says: cuz there's a crazy lady in the apartments across from me I suspect may have him

Nancy says: she was very interested in my cats a few weeks ago, when their collars had gone missing

Nancy says: so they looked like strays

Nancy says: I bought them new fancy collars with tags last monday and put them on monday after work

Nancy says: the next day he was gone

2008 says: how did their collars go missing in the first place?

Nancy says: I have no idea

Nancy says: they were nice ones, I kind of wondered if someone took them

2008 says: probably her

Nancy says: reflective and glow in the dark

Nancy says: so they'd be extra visible to cars

2008 says: how far away is her apartment?

Nancy says: probably about 50 feet from my back door

2008 says: we need to figure out if she has that cat, and if so, how to get it

2008 says: have you tried knocking on her door and asking if she's seen him?

Nancy says: I don't know which door is hers

Nancy says: there are at least 6 units in that building I'd say

Nancy says: I've been calling for him while looking at all the windows in the building to see if he came running

Nancy says: he howls like a mofo, I could hear him a block away when I'd walk to the bus. so I know if he could hear me he'd howl back

2008 says: there are many, many cat lovers at dem underground. i should post there, and see if anyone has any ideas on how to smoke out the crazy lady

Nancy says: you should probably add that I've already been to the humane society

2008 says: whatevah, i do what i want!

My hope is that someone here at DU will come up with some sort of inspired plan, covert or otherwise, for finding out if the crazy lady has Nancy's cat.

I have to go to work now, and won't be back to check responses until late tonight. Please keep this kicked, for the sake of Nancy and her missing cat?

Also, I'm sending this link to Nancy (who voted for Kerry in 2004, by the way), so please keep the responses optimistic.

1. I would say contact your local ASPCA

And ask their advice. Maybe I've watched too many episodes of 'Animal Cops' but they will often check out animal neglect cases and 'crazy cat ladies' usually count. I'm not saying do anything shady like anonymously report her for animal abuse but call them up and tell them the whole story. Even if they can't help directly perhaps they can steer your friend to someone who can.

3. Don't know whether this is possible but

can Nancy friends help out and go door to door in the building, knocking on the doors, and handing whoever answers the door one of the flyers?

The friends don't have to mention Nancy's suspicions that the crazy lady has it, just say Nancy is looking for her missing cat and ask them if they've seen it.

Who knows? Maybe someone will say oh yeah, I saw that crazy lady with a cat just like that? Then she might at least have confirmation.

My heart goes out to Nancy. I hope her kitty will be returned to her.

4. If it were my cat, I'd have knocked on every fucking door within a 5 mile

radius on the first day and moved out from there... leaving flyers behind with every person I saw.

And I actually did that once when Felix didn't come home for a day and half.

Not only did I give everyone flyers... I asked them tocheck their attics and garages and basements.

I'm pretty sure he was in one neighbor's barn.

7. I hate to say this but I'm going to

The "crazy lady" may have been concerned because these cats were let outdoors. If the cats are missing perhaps being outdoors might be a dangerous place for the cats and they have been run over by cars or whatever. I don't think it's wise to demonize as "crazy" someone who might have just been concerned for strays.

8. It's true that the lady might care about cats, but regarding Nancy's...

..."crazy" label:

I've known Nancy for 10 years, and her use of the word crazy was her way of making a long story short.

In other words, she isn't calling the woman crazy merely because she thinks the woman took her cat. If I were to ask for specifics, she'd tell me all about the mental instability she witnessed from this neighbor long before her cat went missing.

I haven't asked for those details because Nancy and I currently communicate primarily by instant message, and have to pick and choose among the details of a subject.

9. If you google on "pet detective".....

There are several people supposedly in business to find your pet or advise you how. I have never tried one of these. I happened to come across this once, but lost the actual bookmark I saved in case I ever really needed it.

One that impressed me at the time, uses tracking dogs to find your lost pet.

I realize you want only optimistic responses. But you simply cannot let your cats go outside.
