What kind of MP3 player should I get, it must be Windows compatable
and my iPod is not.

I also need at least 1 gb. Is anyone familiar with any of the devices that fit my requirements? (It's for audio books which are free now from my library for download Yippie!)

1. iPods are windows compatible.
I'm not sure about the 1st generation, but they are now. Do you have iTunes on your PC? If not, download it free from the Apple website. You need iTunes for iPods.

3. yes, I have iTunes...only a year or two old, I remember I got a message
to update it but I ignored it. I'm gonna try that. Thanks! (They don't list iPod as compatable on their web site....http://www.playsforsure.com/findportabledevices.aspx I've been using audible but that costs money and this is FREE! Free audible books....I'm in heaven!)

6. Most of my friends have iPods and PCs.
The plays for sure website is talking about windows media player files, which are not MP3s.

There are also free programs out there that can convert .wmv files to .mp3 files.

8. ah, maybe THAT's my problem.
It is a windows media player file. . .

This is what the site says: NetLibrary's eAudiobooks can be listened to on a wide range of portable devices, including portable music players, portable media centers, Pocket PCs, and even select smartphone devices. In order to be considered a device that works with NetLibrary eAudiobooks, the only requirement is that the device must be able to support playback of secure or protected wma files.

9. Yeah, that's the problem.

It has nothing to do with iPods not being pc compatible, it just has to do with iPods not reading that particular file type. You can also "rip" books on cd from the library onto your computer in MP3 format and they will work fine on your iPod.

10. Yep, WMA = Windows Media Audio
Therein lies the problem. The ipod itself is compatible with Windows (the operating system) but does not support Windows Media playback. Like haruka said, you can get software to convert the file.

12. I'm not so sure, but if so, where do I get the software?
this file tells me I only have 20 days and 9 hours left to listen (downloaded this morning) so I'm thinking maybe this file has something in it that protects it from "stuff".

14. Trust me, it's almost assuredly the issue.
WMA can be copy protected, which is a pain in the ass. I'm not sure about software for converting, I haven't used any in a few years. These days I just make sure what I'm downloading is in MP3 format, otherwise I don't bother.

20. Audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

Open the file you want with Audacity. Chose "export as" and "mp3" to convert a file in mp3 format.

19. I like RCA MP3 Players because they support the MP3Pro...
...format. MP3s encoded at 128kb in MP3Pro format sound as good as 192kb regurlar MP3s and take up half the
space. A very, very solid choice.

11. Well, I have an old 3rd gen IPOD
....as well as an IPOD shuffle and a Video IPOD and I've run them all successfully on my HP with with Windows XP. It's a 3 year old laptop, not even loaded with the cutting-edge whips and jingles, but I've never had a problem with it.

Personally, I think IPODs are totally user-friendly, and the online support can answer any qqq that might arise. If you're gonna chuck your CD player and go for it, you might as well get the best. And the NANO is a great starter-POD.

15. I just got one of these
It plays mp3s and video, it has a camera and a video recorder. It comes with 512mb but can hold a 2 gig card. It has an e-book reader. It was only 100 bucks and it is pretty cool. I have already put some videos on it and some tunes. I got it also because it has a voice recorder. You can also play it thru your TV and record off your TV too.

18. it says the IRiver needs some sort of firmware update?
anyone know if that's difficult? Remember, I can fly this plane but I can't land it (my 23 year old son moved out of state, I don't have any tech support!)

22. Damn!
I really wish my library had downloadables. I love audiobooks.

But you don't need a GB for audiobooks. Not even close. I use a little cheap cd player. It plays MP3s, and is compatable with CDRW so I re-use the same CD over and over. It's the least expensive, most sensible way I found. (less than $30, assuming you have a CD burner).

Email me some of those books!

23. I'm not sure if I have a CD burner but I'm pretty sure these are not
burnable (if that's a word). The site tells me I only have 21 days to listen to the book and I can only sync it 3 times (which I think means download) but when I press the rip or burn buttons it does nothing.

Check with your library. The site is www.Netlibrary.com My library just got it. A friend told me or I wouldn't even know.

I have a little portable CD player as I've been addicted to audiobooks for years, long before download was possible. I joined audible some time ago and love the convienience of "shopping" online and having my book instantly.
