Favorite, but OBSCURE Comedy Movies!
Some of my favorites...

1. Enter Laughing. Carl Reiner's semi-autobiographical story about a young Jewish boy in the 30's who wants to be an actor. IMHO, one of Jose Ferrer's best performances.

2. The President's Analyst. James Coburn as the President's shrink. The "FBR" (whose agents are all VERY short) is trying to kill him and Godfrey Cambridge (who left this world WAY too soon) as the "CEA" agent trying to protect him. The villian is "The Phone Company".

3. Goodbye Columbus. This movie defined my late High School & College years. Some good songs by The Associaltion (remember them?) and Ali McGraw was actually GOOD!

Yours?

89. No
He's been nominated about 7 or 8 times, but has never won. He got an Honorary Oscar a few years ago which he almost declined because he thought it meant he would be ineligible to be nominated and he figured he had a few good performances left in him.

Getting back to the topic, I love the movie "The Wrong Guys" (1986). It's about a group of guys -- all played by standup comics like Louie Anderson, Richard Belzer, Franklin Ajaye, and the guy who did the sitcom with Jamie Lee Curtis who had been part of a Cub Scout troop who hadn't been able to finish a camping trip because of some bullies. So twenty years later they decide to finish the trip only to have an exaped convict (John Goodman) show up at the same time and mistake them for the FBI. It's terribly hilarious and hilariously terrible all at the same time.

Any of the Martin and Lewis comedies especially "The Stooge".

25. Peking Opera Blues
This was the hit of the Portland International Film Festival in about 1988 or 1989. It's by Tsui Hark, who later directed A Chinese Ghost Story, but unlike those later works, it's more nearly a pure slapstick comedy than a martial arts film--and with sight gags and bizarre situations that you've never seen before. I'll never forget what happens when the female spy is caught in a bedroom after having just killed one of the bad guys... No, it's not this scene. I couldn't find it on the Internet, and besides, I don't want to spoil it for you.

Hilarious.

Also "Bingo Long Traveling All Stars and Motor Kings" -- you gotta see Richard Pryor pretending to be an Indian baseball player so he can get hired in the white leagues. Billy Dee Williams, James Earl Jones, etc.

Here's a review from IMDB:

One of the best baseball comedies mainly because of its very real and believable dramatic points. It also deals with a subject that has rarely been touched on in film: the Negro Leagues. The cast is absolutely incredible. Top to bottom a list of legends field this magnificent flick! James Earl Jones fits his aging sluggers role superbly and who better to serve up a ripping hot fastball than Billy Dee Williams! Richard Pryor gets high marks for his "faux-latino" Charlie Snow whose only reason for being on the team is because he has a nice car. Pryor also has a racey scene with a white prostitute and two paid hit men. Special mention of Carl Gordon who has a small role here. I loved him as the Dad on the great but all too short lived sitcom "Roc." Who gonna hit my invite pitch? Nobody. Not no one. Never. Bingo Long is the stuff of modern folklore. Invite pitch! Invite pitch! Invite pitch! A LOST BASEBALL CLASSIC. A great double feature would be "A League Of Their Own."

38. "American Dreamer"
Silly rip-off of "Romancing the Stone," with JoBeth Williams as a mystery writer in Paris who, after receiving a conk on the head (don't they always?)wakes up and thinks she IS her female detective character. Tom Conti is the love interest.

It's deep as a puddle, but Williams is an absolute scream once she snaps into her alter ego, and the movie never stops to catch its breath for the next 90 minutes.

48. Lollilove

Brilliant ultra-low budget mockumentary written & directed by Jenna Fischer (Dawn in the US Office) who stars alongside her real life husband James Gunn (writer of Tromeo & Juliet which would be another nomination here). They play heightened versions of themselves, determined to help the needy (& climb the Hollywood ladder) by setting up a charity to give lollipops to the homeless.

Also Only Human - a charming & hilarious farce which begins when a Jewish girl brings her Palestinian boyfriend home to her unsuspecting family.

Garafalo steals it--"Barney, could you please stop poking the dead body with a stick? Thank you..."

you had to be 17. Of course, I looked like 12, so they stopped me.

62. Sex and Chocolate -- Dawn French
It was surprising to me, because she didn't play one of those over-the-top comedy characters (e.g. Vicar of Dibley) -- but there were a lot of funny moments in the movie, even though it described what could have been a sad situation (a woman living in a poor London neighbourhood, married to a school janitor, with memories of a boyfriend who is now rich and glamorous).

In New Orleans.

Quaid/Turner are a married couple, FBI or CIA Or both? agents on extended family leave with a 6 month old baby, vacationing in N.O. Of course they get mixed up in an ongoing crime. Tucci is a mugger who keeps running into them, with disastrous results for Tucci's character.

Love love this movie.

25 words or less: American Graffiti meets Porky's.

Featuring a pre-"Nanny" Fran Drescher ("What's the matter? Come on! I'm all hot and bothered!"), a pre-"Arliss" and pre-"Batman" Robert Wuhl, Leigh French ("The Smothers Brothers Show") as a loose PTA member, Gaylord Sartain ("Hee Haw") as a cartoon overweight cop, "Officer Bimbo," and two unfortunate low points:

1). Pre-fame Michelle Pfeiffer, clearly mid-semester on her acting classes

2). Tony Danza, whose acting is about as convincing as George Allen saying he "made up" the word "macacca."

When the movie finally came out on VHS / DVD, the attempt was made to position Pfeiffer and Danza as the "stars," but that's clearly not the case. They participate in a secondary, trite and highly disposable sub-plot (She desperately wants to be an actress, Tony struggles with being supportive of her dreams, because he has self-esteem issues and fears losing her to Tinsel Town, but she just thinks he's not being supportive, which sets up the big scene where he...well, it's as bad as it sounds).

"I need my puffer!"

"Hey! Ironbox Twins!"

"Have you ever heard MY version of Volare?"

"He's looking for somebody named DICK!"

1. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother: Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Madeline Khan in a fun frolic concerning the Siggy Holmes, the slightly bitter sibling of the famous sleuth.

2. Where Does It Hurt?: Peter Sellers as a corrupt, horny administrator of a hospital where bedside manners take on a whole new meaning.

3. Used Cars: Great late 70s/early 80s laugh riot with Kurt Russell as a slick used car dealer who has political ambitions.

4. Gorp: Wild summer camp comedy from 1980 with Michael Lembeck and Dennis Quaid. Most memorable line was this crazy camp religious freak named Bible Louie who ran around naked, offering such scriptures as "And the Lord said, FUCK YOU ASSHOLES!!!!"

5. Jamon, Jamon: Outrageous, cynical Spanish comedy (characters are actually named in the end credits, another hilarious part of the movie, "La Madre Puta," "La Puta Madre," "La hija de puta," etc.) from '92. The pig/garlic scene is too wild for words!

6. Just Tell Me What You Want: The scene where a REALLY pissed off Ali McGraw beats the hell out of Alan King with a purse in the middle of Bergdorf Goodman is a cinematic gem.

7. Which Way To The Front? One of Jerry Lewis's later, underrated efforts where he play a spoiled rich mogul who, unable to deal with being rejected by the US Army to fight in WWII, decides to whip up his own military team to take on the Nazis. If you're like me and love Jerry Lewis, this film is a comedy must; if you hate him, move along, you'll hate this movie.

8. Cold Turkey: Dick Van Dyke, as a minister, tries to lead his small town in a smoke-out in order to win a huge money prize from a tobacco company.

98. PCU (gotta love the Caine-Hackman Theory!)
Jeremy Piven plays a college student who looks like he's been in college for about 10 years. And the college is run by a President who pushes political correctness to the maximum but really she's in cahoots with David Spade, president of the College Republicans.

One of the funniest parts in the movie is when Gutter (Played by Jon Farveau) gets so fricking stone that he has a fantasy dream that he's in front of the Us Senate Judicary committee and the Committee is asking him whether or not in inhaled. And it's the real Judiciary commitee - you'll see Arlen Specter, Orrin Hatch, Joe Biden and Ted Kennedy in the dream sequence

But the best part about the movie:

The Caine-Hackman Theory. Pigman's senior thesis was based on the fact that no matter what time it is, 24 hours a day, you can find a Michael Caine or Gene Hackman movie playing on TV.

And oh, there's a pit party with George Clinton and the P-Funk Psychadelics in it - gotta love that

"Big Trouble" was supposed to be released in theaters shortly after September 11th, 2001, and was pulled because of subject matter. Even with Tim Allen, it's one of the funnier movies I've ever seen. Stanley Tucci's character alone makes it worth renting. It also features my favorite actor, Dennis Farina.
