What do you think is the most difficult position to play in any sport?

My hubby and I were discussing - we both thought quarterback - I also thought perhaps being a goalie in hockey.

1. the guy in the outfield in baseball who has to scratch himself a lot

and be able to dodge all the tobacco spit spots while running to catch a ball, assuming one ever comes between chaws.

25. You would be surprised...

The deer up here in Wisconsin know that when the popping sounds start in the beginning of winter, to lay low until the sun sets.

A hunter on the ground can easily walk by a deer that is mere meters away and not know that it is there. I should know, back when I hunted I did it a number of times.

3. Any hockey position...because not only do you have to be proficient

Once you master the skating, you just have to swing your stick and smack the other players around a lot. :P

10. HItting in major league baseball.

Getting a piece of a round object, less than 3" in diameter, coming at you at 100 mph, never in a straight line, thrown by a large, strong guy who knows he has to get you out to keep his job (and who therefore is motivated to throw that ball AT YOU in order to intimidate you).

I used to play baseball and hitting pitchers who threw at 70 mph or so was very difficult, so I can't imagine hitting against the best pitchers.

11. Quarterback, yup

He's got to know what he's supposed to do, what the other 10 guys on his side of the ball are supposed to do, and have a pretty good idea what the 11 guys on the other side are gonna do.

I once heard a QB described as something like "One man searching for order amid the chaos caused by 21 others."

The average NFL playbook has more than 100 plays. Quarterbacks have to know every one of 'em. I'm not a football fan anymore, but that boggles my mind.

As it stands, catchers have to do all that I mentioned, and hit (which is only the toughest thing to do in pro sports) - where pitchers only have to hit at all in one league and don't really even do that.

It's HARD watching your kid play, go for a goal, miss, fall down, get hurt, pick himself up and keep on going .

But oh so rewarding.

I was never a pushy soccer mom. I just wanted the boys to have fun and they did.

22. Tire changer on a NASCAR team

Tire changing on an open-wheel team is second, but not by much.

Tire men have to be able to remove the five lug nuts on the tire, remove the wheel from the car, put the new wheel on (they weigh about a hundred pounds apiece) and get all five lug nuts tight in about four seconds. Then they have to run around to the other side of the car and do it again. And for added excitement, they've got to do this in the middle of the road. Three or four tire men get run over every year.

You also have to know how to fix a car if it breaks down or crashes, you have to be able to push one and you have to react to urgencies VERY well.

The reason open-wheel tire changing isn't as bad, is that open-wheel cars have this one huge gland nut holding the wheel on and the air jack on an open-wheel car lets them change all the tires on the car at once.

They are great athletes, serves are coming at you at well over 100mph, it takes some skill to hit some of those shots on the lines.
