42. when doing public speaking
everyone, usually has a word, or phrase they say/repeat when they are nervous...thats why "like" is used so much, almost everyone has a little word/phrase they repeat...for me its "and all that stuff"...thats my main catch phrase...when I first started public speaking, it was "and all that shit" but I got in trouble with that, and used Stuff instead, but it still sounded ridiculous....

14. Which bothers you more?
The overuse of "like" as you've described it, or the overuse of "y'know," which peppers the speech of several adults of my acquaintance. I've counted seven "y'knows" in a single sentence.

Broadly speaking, I'm aware that "like" and "y'know" are surrogates for "uh" or "um," but they still annoy the hell out of me.

16. They are afraid to sound like brainy, you know like egg-headed
so inserting "like" every 3 words shows their peers that they value their acceptance by the group more highly than academic excellence.

The evil twin partner of "like" is the phrase "you know" which serves the same purpose.

As pointed out here, 'like' and 'ya know' are inserted into every damn
sentence, ad nauseam.

Just for the heck of it, the teacher should do a class exercise where those
three words are not allowed. Period.

Heck, I once had an assignment for an English class where we had to
write an essay without using the 'be' verbs. I almost made it, however
I did insert 'is' towards the end. Bam! You're out!!

I remember the instructor had a cold that day, and it sounded like
he was assigning an essay with no 'beavers'! Yeah, I know where this
is going-- For TWO DAMN minutes I kept hearing 'no beavers' thinking
OK, this weird guy is really close to retirement, but WTH?

He finally wrote 'BE' on the board.

:hi:

There's an exercise I've tried where one goes as long as possible without
saying 'I' or referring to themselves in any way.

Very strange... Especially, after awhile.

there seem to be, like, people who are like, always wrong, and they like always blab out like "answers" anyway, even though they apparently don't even know what subject they're in.... and like I can't figure it out.

...sigh, i need to work on being less anti social.

Is it a workshop? It'd be interesting to learn if those students write the same way they speak.

26. Yes it is a workshop and no they are, for the most part,
at least able to consturct a coherent poem...

Now they are a little light on the historical persepcetive equired to really enjoy all poems, but they seem to be able to write from the heart...

Perhaps I should take the say something in class...

Or maybe start talking as they do in my booming voice to show them how silly it sounds...

I have nothing to lose but their respect...

30. Well, you may lose more than that
I think in a workshop there has to be an atmosphere that you're all in it together. When you lose that atmosphere, I think the learning environment suffers.

24. It's just nerves....
people grow out of it after they get used to socializing.

I grew up in "The Valley." Everyone I knew threw in a "like" every other word. Nearly evryone grew out of it.

Though, admittedly, I still say "dude" often, and refer to both women and men as "man."
