A thing of interest to petrol heads

VW have developed an engine that develops 168 bhp and in a Golf can do 38mpg combined (UK gallons). The displacement of the engine is 1.4 litres, or 85 cubic inches.

I think that's quite remarkable.

Anyone who likes a nice engine note won't be impressed by it.

I am thinking the application in which this engine will shine is mundane town cars - imagine how small they could make it to develop, say, 80bhp.

gas or diesel?
The latest thing I'm reading here in car articles geared for women, is that auto makers are looking to push the diesel engine in cars again. It never really caught on here. However, they have become quieter & peppier and the fuel efficiency puts regular engines to shame. I'm still hoping they can get the hydrogen engines working safely.

Diesels are wildly popular in Europe. I heard half of all new cars sold here are TDIs. I haven't got one myself, but I can see the attraction: they are quite a revelation to drive, the way they pull hard from lov revs and get good mileage and all.

85 cubic inches is about seven or eight times the displacement of the average lawn mower engine. So imagine a lawn mower developing about 20 horsepower.
