My cat is obsessed with me.

I have a 2 year-old Maine Coon mix named Gandalf the Grey. He's a kind cat - perhaps the kindest I've ever owned...

... except for the fact that he's a little shit at night. Every evening, after I've curled into bed next to Mr. Writer, Gandalf walks above my head on the pillow. It matters little to him how much space actually exists between me and Mr. Writer - even when there's NO SPACE between us, if you know what I mean - but he forces his way in between us, kneading at my side, purring.

Now I can handle that for, oh, five minutes. He does finally settle, but it's ALWAYS with some part of his body ON TOP OF MINE. This morning, after I shoved him off literally ten times for placing his leg, his torso, or his shoulder on my arm, he finally decides to hop on top of my chest, sit down, and stare at me. I think his message to me was, "I don't care what you think. I OWN YOU." I was THIS CLOSE TO STRANGLING HIM.

Disgusted, I arose and went into my office, closing the door. The doors to my office are French doors, and as expected, Gandalf followed me out of the bedroom so he could sit and stare at me mournfully through the door.

At this moment, he now is trying to open the door with his paws, to no effect. The door is shaking and rumbling rather dramatically. What is wrong with this damned animal?????????? :argh:

2. I have a Maine Coon mix. He's exactly the same way.

Last night he took up the entire bed. I'm forced to sleep at an angle. I get up at 3 am to take a piss, he's right behine me. If I close the bathroom door, he scratches and howls til I let him in. He sleeps most of the day under the quilt on my bed, then talks to me periodically through the night. If I don't respond, he sits on my pillow and taps my face with his paw. I am OWNED.

3. Been there...

Out cat, known by some as "Bear," used to wake us up every, single, break-of-dawn...around 5 a.m. After asking the vet what to do, and reading a little about "cat training," we broke down and used the "squirt gun" on him! It was hilarious...every morning, when he'd start to wake us up, my husband and I would have "squirt gun wars" with our cat (we still laugh about it to this day)! It worked...sort of. We all called a truce, so-to-speak, after a couple of weeks (yes, two weeks), and now "Bear" only wakes us up about 10 minutes before the first alarm clock in the morning.

He's now 13 years old...and a gentle old guy. But, he still wakes us up...exactly 10 minutes before our alarm clock(s) on work days. I have no idea how our cat knows, but he doesn't wake us up as early on our days off. Cats are so smart. :)

4. My big guy used to do that when he was younger. He even

managed to figure out daylight savings time - on the day we switched the clock he still managed to be patting my face just before the alarm! Now he's retired, and the little girl (who looks a lot like your Bear) has taken on the 'be annoying in the morning' duties...

6. mine will tap me on the face if I lie down on my side when I

first go to bed, until I roll over on my back (my normal go to sleep position). Then he gets on my chest and purrs profoundly ...a deep bass purr... and as long as I am touching him he is happy. If I stop touching him, he taps my face again until I pet him or stroke him in some way.

Now this is the cat who for years only slept on the foot of the bed most nights.

one of my other cats always wants to be on me to sleep, so I think the older cat is asserting his place as senior cat. If he is on me first, then the younger cat is quite content to lie by my side. They are crazy little critters, gotta love'em

7. I realized one day...

...that my calico cat was watching me ALL THE TIME. The moment I would sit down, she was on my lap. The instant I laid down, she was curled up against me. She sat on top of my computer monitor every moment I was at my desk. She was focused on me 24/7, even when she was allegedly sleeping. She's been gone two years now, and I miss that companionship, creepy as it might seem.

My brown tabby was the worst at night. Lord almighty. If he couldn't get some reaction any other way, he would wiggle the framed artwork on the walls with his paws. I would HAVE TO get up for that, not wanting glass and frames on the floor. He broke every piece of pottery I ever put on a shelf. He's gone, too, wahhhhh. RIP, my dear Chessie.

My current marmalade boy is hilarious at night; he's so affectionate. Then comes 5:56 a.m. and he starts agitating. Every morning. I'm a nightowl, so it's a bother to have a cat chirping so early. Gotta love them!

8. I've got a pillow sleeper, too.

My almost 14-year-old girl. She's chubby but little, and my pillow is big. I LOVE it when she's up there, warming my head up. I still have enough space for my head, and I always seem to sleep better when she's there. When I sort of do one of those half-wake-up moments and I realize she's there, I smile and go back to sleep. :loveya:

9. There are more cats in this joint than people. In fact, at the moment

I'm at a 7-1 disadvantage. But, the constantly evolving cat sculpture keeps itself occupied. They have cliques and stuff, lol.

Is Gandalf the only furr baby in the house?

of my sweetie every night. And it's not just him;
almost every cat she's ever had has done the same
thing. And at least 2 of them that I know of had
a preference for sleeping on her head.

12. My Dora follows me everywhere

As soon as I get in bed, she's right there, laying ON me...not next to me. When I get home from work, she's waiting on me, despite the fact that three other people are already here. she also wakes me up before my alarm goes off, and she has no concept of weekends. Every day, 6:30 or earlier, there she is! if i don't wake up, I get rough kitty tongue on my forehead.

13. My now departed cat used to wake me up by biting my eyelashes...

I'm a side sleeper. When I had two cats, one would sleep in the alcove formed by my bent knees; the other would sleep in that dip formed by my waist. When I wanted to shift position, I'd often just stay put so I wouldn't disturb the cats. I also say "please" and "thank you" to my cats. I'm nicer to them than I am to people. But they're also nicer to me than most people are.

About cats awakening the people they own prior to the alarm: if you folks have an alarm like mine, there's a faint little click a few minutes before the alarm sounds. It could be the cats hear that and respond accordingly.

That kneading someone mentioned: cats do that when they think you're they're mother. They are acting out what they did when nursing, trying to get the milk to flow to the teets. Of course, I have no idea which cat explained that to a human so we'd all understand what they're thinking.

My current cat started out (when I got him a few weeks ago) sleeping on my pillow. Or he'd choose bedtime to annoy the hell out of me. But he has gotten over it. I just kept moving him every time he tried to be my hat or shawl, and maybe he figured out it wasn't gonna fly.

I've heard that playing with active cats prior to bedtime will wear them out, make them settle down when you do.

14. *sigh* my kittyboy used to be like that, now he's gone

I miss his lil obsessive behavior. Our two lil new kitties are not like that. Agatha absolutely adors me but she does not like to be carried and she does not sleep with me, she just follows me around. she is affectionate but on her terms. Kittybill is affectionate but is more attached to my sweetie than me. I love them dearly none the less but I miss Kittyboy.
