I hear a hawk. Have been hearing them for many days. Hawk season?

Is there a hawk season? I know the deer are getting ready to mate -- god help me when I drive.

But the hawks are everywhere right now.

Not complaining -- I love them. And the owls! I hear them almost every night that I'm able to leave the windows open.

I love living in the country.

1. Fall migration is underway

There's a place near Corpus Christi TX where thousands of hawk roost at night during migration.

In the morning, hundreds soar skyward in huge "kettles" (think hawk tornadoes) - it's an amazing sight...

2. yes -- migrating -- i have them in a garden near my home.

a few hundred feet away.

the folks have left already -- and now just one juvenile remains.
they are coopers hawks.

Man, I'm envious of you, dear lady!

Here in the city,I once heard an eagle when I took my son to
the Amtrak station in Irvine, near the foothills
of Cleveland National Forest ( El Toro MC Base).
Unfortunately, I couldn't spot the eagle.

It was one of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard.

Occasionally, I hear the flock of wild parrots we have
here in Newport-Costa Mesa land. They have a very
distinct sound, it's very loud and high pitched.

5. Hawks migrate, so do monarch butterflys. In early September

you can see them hugging the shore of Lake Michigan, headed south. Really amazing when you think about it.

I am SO ignorant of that part of the country. So here, I'll show my ignorance: it gets warm enough around Lake Michigan to support monarch butterflies? :dunce: How cool.

11. I heard an owl in our neighbor's yard recently...

I posted here about it, and Petersond mentioned that his wife was afraid of owls, because they were bad omens according to Cherokee belief.

My Aunt passed away later that day.

16. She had acute lymphocytic leukemia...

and just started having really serious problems this year. We expected her to have a few more months; but she died in her sleep a couple of days after my mom got there.

I'm glad she won't suffer anymore, though I'll miss her.

i'm really sorry for your loss but i don't think you need cringe in fear every time you hear an owl, they're quite harmless and anyway you've heard them a thousand times probably and never noticed

13. yeah they stage

i live in southeast louisiana so in late july/early august i could hear the mississippi kites calling their fledglings and also discussing the situation as groups of them gathered up to get ready to migrate

they've been gone for some time now but depending on where you live it is high season for migration and you could have much discussion among the hawks as they travel or prepare to travel

also don't forget, depending on where you live, you could have incoming

for instance i saw merlin the other day and soon i will be seeing the kestrels that come here for the winter -- your yard is somebody's "south"

good information here. i wish i knew more about birds.

I once saw a kestrel (I think - compared what I saw to Audubon) in a loblolly pine, just off my balcony in Long Beach, CA, eating a sparrow. :( But what a beautiful bird.
