1. I'm from Austin, and there is a certain look to some people here.
Of course I don't look like I'm from Texas, but I wasn't born here.

2. HELL, YES.
Look for...

a) Blonde highlights or crew cut

b) Ironed cotton clothing - preferably with embroidery

c) A completely phony smile to accompany a completely phony personality

But one word of caution: AUSTIN IS NOT TEXAS.

6. Hold on... you didn't take this to heart, did you?
I spent 18 years in that God forsaken state! I have yet to meet a group of phonier folks than I did in North Texas.

7. Must have been the company you kept.
I have yet to meet a group of nicer ones. Both spots have their merits.

Attitude is everything.

14. Hang around a television station in Fort Worth long enough...
and you'll know what I'm talking about. I have yet to meet a group who accessorized better than these pinned up flakes. The sad thing is, when I went to New York afterward I actually met real, down to earth folks working on the NETWORK level.

I'm glad that you met a bunch that you get along with... I lived in Texas for 18 years and went to school in Austin. I will take Austin over the rest of Texas anyday.

I mean, you can't have your own opinion on this matter, now, can you? :sarcasm: ;)

5. Yes - for example, when I first moved out to CA from LA, I was taking
roll in my first class, and about half-way down the roster I came to one girl who, when I looked at her, the first thing I said was "you're from Texas, right?" Suffice to say, I was correct...

10. People can always tell
I'm from Texas by my cultivated air of phoniness. What they can't tell is that I'm phony because I hate them.

16. Especially the ones at the Olive Garden...
these cute little Texas women breast feeding their kids while slamming down Coronas. I don't think they have time to call other people assholes. ;)

21. I see how people see it as phoniness though
but I will continue to be polite to everyone. It's like my dad (a Texan) used to say; sometimes you have to eat a shit sandwich, smile and compliment the chef. But if you're nice eventually you get to own the restaurant. Little bit of Texas philosophy for ya'll.

15. Well, they do if they get stationed at
the sub base near me. (CT). People wearing western attire in New England tend to stand out. Especially the boots. :)

18. For the record:
This is the first time I have ever heard the accusation that most people who live in Texas have "phoniness." That's right....right here in the liberal, loving, benevolent, caring, hugging, DU Lounge.

Food for thought, I guess. :sarcasm:

19. So, you don't remember the great Texas/California/New York Flame Wars
of 2001 (or thereabouts)? A little bit of friendly 'my state is better than your state' taunting blew up into a flame fest that rivalled spanking and Fat Actress combined!

23. When I moved to New York...
and they talked about the folks visiting from the Dallas station, that is all they could talk about. How they dressed up to the nines, as if they could impress on mere appearance, and how, for some, their smile didn't seem all that genuine. Image over substance.
