I posted this in the photography group but it may be of interest here.
I was playing around with my camera once again and a new lens, a Canon 100mm macro, taking pictures of flowers and I came across this.

This a cosmos flower from our garden. Look at the pistils. At least I think they are pistils. I'm not a botanist. I swear they are perfect star shaped figures.

Closer look... See the stars?

It's amazing what is around you but not readily apparent.

2. So that's why it's called Cosmos!

Noticing little stuff, and words- two of my favorite things. Thanks!
on edit- The pollen is on the stamen anthers, the bees or wind pick it up and put it on the stigma on the pistil, and voila..."pregnant" flower!

3. Thanks for the diagram.
So it is the stamen I am looking at? Here is another picture of what I think is the pistil of this flower. It's almost transparent so look carefully.

4. Boy that is one fancy cosmos - ours never had those fancy petals
But all kinds of birds love the seeds from those flowers - especially gold finches. Whole flocks used to come down into our garden to eat the seeds.
