But I hate to say (about to be flamed) that the "performance" from the Raiders last night was unbelievably bad. Favre threw up a couple of balls into double and triple coverage and his receivers came down with the catches. While the receivers made wonderful adjustments, I couldn't help noticing that the Raider db's didn't seem to put up much effort. His first touchdown throw was fabulous, but he made some throws last night that he couldn't get away with against a team who hadn't cashed in the season.

I hate Brett Favre, but am glad that he was able to perform as well as he did despite the loss of his father. I'm sure that game was dedicated to his fathers dedication to him.

Offense and Defense are playing for Favre. The receivers are making the extra effort with moves that give them the extra yardage. The Line is giving Favre time. The Defense is pressing and attacking.

The difference between the Packers and the Detroit Lions comes down to Brett Favre. He has carried this team on his back for years. I love Brett Favre, and my intention here was not to question his right to grieve in any way he chooses. I send him and his family the most sincere condolences, as we all do.

The point I'm trying to raise - I'm sure few of us would go to work the day after a parent died. Those who do have every right to do so, as you point out, but I believe most people would take some time off.

Brett Favre is one of the greatest football players of all time. An important part of being an elite athlete is a sense that you always have to "play through the pain". Usually, this involves physical injuries, but in this case, it involved a much different and more serious type of pain.

My question would be "why is it so important to play through the pain?" Most of us do not see the long-term physical effects of this attitude on our sports heroes, because once they retire we lose touch with them. Just as one example, we don't see the ex-football player who can't walk at the age of 45 because his knees, hips, and ankles are shot.

I don't claim to know that something like this is operating here with BF. I'm not even sure how I feel about it. That's why I posted what I did, in the hopes that people on this site can help me deepen my thoughts, as well as challenge them if necessary

Brett Favre is consumed by football. I can understand his desire to play perfectly, he channeled his grief positively and it allowed him to step his game up that little extra notch. Playing allowed him to block out thoughts of anything other than his job. When my Grandfather died I needed to do something to take my mind off it so I went testing with my racecar. It might sound weird, but it's the most stress relieving thing I know, just as football is for Favre, racing is for me.

We each react differently to bereavement, but I would have done the same thing in his position and I applaud him.

They encouraged him to play from the get go. His wife was clearly on the phone to relatives throughout the game. This was part of the early grieving process for all of them.

Yeah, the Raiders are down and out, but they played well last week, and anyone who knows the NFL knows that the difference between teams is ever so slight, regardless. This was a performance for the ages. Period. The Packers are no powerhouse this year, though they played like one tonight.

Yes, they were playing the Raiders. Yes, the Packers are quite possibly overrated. BUT, that was the best half of football I have ever seen. 15 of 18 for 311 yards and 4 tds. That is a great game for most of the starting qbs in the league, and he did it in 30 minutes!
And to do that a day after his father died is just incredible.

Viking and Bears fans can piss and moan all they want, but Brett Favre is not only a first-ballot Hall of Famer, he is quite possibly the best QB of all time. He is better than Aikman, better than Staubach, better than Tarkenton and FAR better than any QB the Bears ever had. There are only a small handfull of QBs who are even on the same PLANET as Favre (Marino, Elway and Graham come to mind).


Last night will go down as one of the gutsiest performances in all of sport history. (Think Kirk Gibson and Willis Reed.)

at the University of Southern Mississippi. I didn't know him but I saw him on campus all the time. He liked to drink, dance and hang out at this one C/W bar on Hwy15 that was very popular in Hattiesburg. He always seemed pretty down to earth to me for a good ol boy.
