Poll question: What is your favorite Sci Fi series of all time?
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 12:54 AM by The Zanti Regent
Tried to look at the tube tonight and got real bored. I can still remember when TV had SOMETHING interesting on it!

2. One Step Beyond.
I'm not entirely sure it was real science-fiction, as it purported to relate true stories, but it was quite creepy.

One of the original UPN shows. "The Prisoner" reinterpreted for the 1990s, in a way.

4. Tough call
I voted for Twilight Zone because it not only scared the tar out of me when I was little, but it tackled some sensitive social issues as well. Rod Serling was a great director and had to fight to get many of his themes past the suits.

The Outer Limits was really creepy. I remember watching the first episode at my friends house and running home after it was over. Some alien climbing out of a radio transmitter because the night DJ turned the power up too high.

And Science Fiction Theatre! Man, that used to be on Sunday morning in Chicago. Loved the theme song.

..was "The Galaxy Being". I was all of 5 when it aired and it scared me sh!tless.

I also remember "Wolf 359" being another good episode.

5. I Just had a discussion with my yr old son about this.

He goes with Star Wars but I went with Star Trek and it's spinofffs.

The appeal that Star Trek has to me is much the same as a fan rooting for his hometown sports team. The Humans on Star trek represented a future us, a possible path for us that leads to embracing enlightenment and science. The historical refrerences made in Star Trek and almost any episode dealing with time travel were my favorties. After The Next Generation, the best spinoff for me was Voyager - I loved every episode - and the premise - a Starfleet ship and crew lost in Space, flung to the far reaches of the universe knowing it would take 75 yrs at max warp to get back. Some of Voyagers time travel and Borg episodes were truly great work.

8. 'Twilight Zone,' far and away.
He broke new ground in a spectacular way.
he made a lot of points about war, racism, facism....he was a WWII vet who had seen the horror of war up close and wanted people to understand the horror.
He insisted on using black actors for roles that weren't necessarily written for black characters, and was one of the first to do that, too....

also, he could be damn funny.

36. I liked Battlestar Galactica too
Just caught the new one last week and I liked it too. A lot of the good stuff from the original show without all the dumb stuff (like three-to-a-fighter Cylons that can't shoot straight). I hope it goes to a regular series.

23. Star Trek, then B5 then Far Scape
Star Trek but mostly because I liked its sequels (including Enterprise) but I thought the B5 sequels (show and movies) were LAME, LAME, LAME. All in all, I think the original B5 was better than any one single Trek series, but Trek is the better overall franchise.

26. I almost hate to admit it, but
as much as loving Star Trek and being a SF fan has affected my life, I just loooooovvvvveeee Babylon 5. It was a much, much better written series overall. Yeah, Trek has had some great shows, but I prefer B5 for its texture and amazing continuity.

29. Another *Space: Above and Beyond* fan
Space: Above and Beyond wasn't just the best science fiction series ever made, it was one of the best series ever made, period.

I'd have to say that it was too subversive for military sci-fi freaks (many of whom are politically conservative) and way too deep for the crowd that just wants eye-candy, but S:AAB supposedly got fairly decent ratings, like another excellent series that got ignoired by FOX-TV, Alien Nation.

According to James Morrison, who played Col. McQueen, the in-vitro commander of the "Wild Cards", he knew that Fox wasn't behind the show at all when one of their execs suggested a backstory involving McQueen's father (click here for Morrison`s description of the event). As an in-vitro, McQueen would have had no parents.

The new Battlestar Galactica had a lot of the same "stuff" that made S:AAB a great series. Which does not bode well for it, I'm afraid.

There's a lot of S:AAB fan sites, too. This one has a fair number of decent links, including where to get hard-to-find S:AAB stuff.

they (scifi channel) should have made a continuation not a reimagined version. Too bad it could have been so big.

28. Mystery Science Theater!
I love that show! It is so funny.

As far as "serious" sci/fi, I like Star Trek TNG best, better than the original or any of the other "recent" shows. The cast was great and only had a few weak spots (Dr. Crusher & son come to mind). That show also had Q, who was a great villain.

31. Sentimental vote for Dr. Who
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 11:00 AM by Bridget Burke
Specifically, the Tom Baker episodes.

However, even as a teenager, Rod Serling's stuff seemed truer to the "serious" science fiction I'd read. Not that I disliked Star Trek--perhaps TNG is my favorite but all the variations are OK (not counting Enterprise).

More recently, Red Dwarf is a fave--a descendant of Dr Who. Farscape was also excellent--I HATE the SCI-FI Channel.

That show was a classic. Dr. Smith alone was worth the show being on. He broke two barriers. The first gay/doctor shown on network television.
