I just saw my cat chase a live frog though the livingroom.

I don't know how this frog got into the house but it is welcome.

This was a adult frog, I can see now my housemates will have fun trying to catch the frog.

6. Can't beat my live Bluejay story.

My cat once came into the house with a live Bluejay in her mouth. (She came through the pet door). It flew around my living room for awhile and finally went out the open door.

When I was married, I brought my very urbane wife to WVa to meet my family, unfortunately on the occasion of my father's funeral. I was really nervous about our exceedingly modest house et al back home, and did my best to quell my anxiety through the sadness. My wife was uncharacteristically charitable that weekend, for which I was grateful.
On the morning we were departing, she got out of bed in the pre-dawn chill first to wash up, and then came back pale and nervous after finding a huge bat had somehow gotten into the old house and stranded itself in the slippery bathtub. I was mortified! Would it do any good to say that this never happened before?

The bat was enormous, but helpless, and eventually I was able (with tennis racket) to encourage it to slither into a big paper bag. When I took it outside and opened the bag, the bat soared effortlessly out, truly beautiful in the dawn's gathering light.

Shock, embarrassment, huge (eventual) laughter? You betcha!!

I think the bat was nature's way of saying "Never be embarassed about where you come from". Actually, I can relate.

Truly the only "up" moment of that weekend.

As for the rest of it, other truly irreconcilable differences came to the fore some years later, and we became another of those "1-in-2-marriages...."

I've since gained a lot more perspective, realizing that we each are truly more than circumstances dictate. My youthful anxieties---it was never shame---were natural then, given our very different families, but all is better now.

Happily, the artistic relationship that brought my ex- and I (we're in the dance field) together is still intact and strong, though we work in different circles mostly nowadays. We've definitely found a better domain for our interactions, after a bit of time spent on opposite coasts (she in CA, me in NYC.)

It is a giggler of a beast-in-the-house story isn't it? I never did tell her about the occasional bird, chipmunk, or blacksnake that found their way indoors in years past...unbelievable since my Dad was such a handy guy with the doors and windows and such. Nature always finds a way, right?

14. Please keep pets away from all frogs and toads--

My schnauzer came into contact with a cane toad and the poison from its parotid glands made him so ill, he died. His liver never recovered.

Bufo marinus is the scientific name if anyone wishes to look them up. They seem to be everywhere.
