Joe Morello: Greatest Drummer Of All-Time
I don't care what anybody says; Joe Morello is the best that ever was:

1. Damn!
I'd be hard-pressed to argue. That guy is clean. :wow:

Check this one — Buddy Rich and "Tonight Show" drummer Ed Shaughnessy, whom I thought was very under-rated.

5. I just watched another Rich solo
He might've been the fastest ever, but there's a helluva lot more to drumming than rolls. Rich was frenzied, and I always got the feeling he was playing for himself. I don't know if I'd want him and his ego in a band with me, whereas I'd feel annointed by Euterpe to have Morello.

6. I like Buddy's style

But you're absolutely right about that.

Buddy had to be out front no matter what, while Joe could lay back and be content to setting the perminiters of the beat when he had to. That's why he and Brubeck clicked so much, He loved those different time signatures as much as Brubeck did...

7. I'm not averse to his style
I'll watch Rich solo in awe. But I prefer Morello's style, as I prefer a ballplayer who can lay down a bunt and steal a base and work the hit-and-run over one whose main contribution is home runs.

I like team players.

2. I agree.
Just based on those two clips, he's the best I've ever seen/heard. No wonder I liked Brubeck so much.

In the second one (1961) you can see his incredible left hand technique. Wow.

Thanks!:hi:

4. He's jaw-dropping
I know he and Paul Desmond hated each other when Joe joined, but Paul (to his credit) came to realize that Joe's total command of the beat allowed himself to completely concentrate on what he did best; play some beauitful, lyrical solos..

10. that was some awesome sticking!
and his hands are so relaxed. A pleasure to watch. Also really nice bass drum work - shows that no one really needs the double bass pedal if they have the skill! I was afraid initially that it was going to be a picture of the guy from Dream Theater. ;)

But, why didn't they also show his accents WITH the band - my drum teacher says that that is the true mark of a really good jazz player.

However, watch Ronald Shannon Jackson, and then we'll talk. Best drumming I ever saw. He is amazing. :)

11. He came to the house a couple of times when I was growing up
A family friend used to work for Ludwig, and when my brother was interested in playing drums the friend brought Joe by to chat.

Neither of us had ANY idea who he was back then - I'll bet my brother still doesn't know. :)
