I live 3,000 miles away, yet the Manhattan vs. Queens BS follows me...

So I meet this nice young couple for lunch to discuss the placecards I'm scribing for their wedding on Saturday. We get to chatting, and the woman asks where I'm from. I say, "New York." Her eyes light up, "Oh, that's where we live!" I say, "Oh? May I ask where? I myself was born and raised in Queens." She comes back with a disappointed "Oh. Well, we live on the Upper West Side." I drew the conversation back to the business at hand, but it really left a sour taste in my mouth.

1. I get that crap all the time - in L.A.

I grew up in an area that's not so nice anymore. I love the reactions at times - I guess they think I should be wearing gang attire or something :-)

It really reveals a lot about a person when this kind of thing comes up in conversation. Like I care about where she lives - all I want to do is conduct our business.

She was born here in the SF Bay Area. I just don't get the competitiveness of it, and I never did.

Even if you had been from the East side she would have looked down her nose at you. Her wedding needs a few placecards entitled "Yuppie Scum."
