All my life I have been fascinated by men.........
I just felt like baring my soul tonight.......

I like tall, well-built men.......

Sturdy masculine bones.........strength and gentleness too.......

But more than the physical is the mental/emotional/intellectual.....

A man who knows who he is and likes himself.......

Who has an incredible sense of humor........who knows how to laugh at himself.......

Who is intelligent and educated.........

Who isn't afraid to say I love you......

And who isn't afraid of his own emotions, or showing them.....

A man with a look of confidence in his eyes....and a way of carrying himself that speaks to that........

Who can gaze out at the world boldly and know that he can make his way in it......

These are all so very attractive to me........

6. I've always liked men who knew who they were and what they
wanted. They were the ones that could get past lust, and get to know and like me. Not who they wanted me to be. Although lust is nice.

Lust certainly has its place!

But I agree ........But they certainly need to want you as you are.......

And not try to remake you in some other image.........

That implies a huge lack of respect, IMHO......

And without respect, there cannot be love......

A lot of people seem to live in disrespectful relationships and call it love. I think it's out of control need, but who am I to judge? I haven't been married for years, thank God.

34. Thank you! Yes that was me.
I crashed my computer and had to have it wiped, so I lost my DU password. Hickman1973 was in honor of my grandfather that I never knew. His last name wasn't Hickman but that was, for some reason, the name he was buried under. It took his family years to find him. He died in 1937 when my mother was 12. My original user name was in his honor. Still is.

42. Hi Peggy
I haven't chatted with you before but I thought I would respond to your nice post.

I am tall, 6'4". It is a gruesome story how I came to be tall; I was once a little boy, and then I grew some. (Yes, I have a sense of humor. I particularly like puns; I had a grandfather who told a lot of very bad puns, and I inherited that from him.)

I do a lot of jogging and hiking (often with the Sierra Club) so I am in good physical shape, though somewhat weak as far as upper body strength is concerned.

I am happy with my intelligence and education. I have always liked and been good with numbers and mathematics since I was a kid, and I have my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science respectively.

I am 55 years old, and had a lot of problems when I was young, most of which I have worked through, so I have come to a place where I have been able to know, like, and accept myself.

One unfortunate result of my having had the problems I had when I was young was that I missed the boat as far as any serious relationship with any woman was concerned when I was young. Also there were things I had wanted to do for myself for a long time; in particular I had long wanted to take a trip to Europe, which I finally did in 1997, at the age of 46. I had in particular wanted to visit Germany, and my trip included Germany and Austria.

Right now I have some anxiety about whether I am ever going to be in a relationship with a woman. Again, I feel I missed the boat when I was young, and I am now in my life where I would have very much wanted to be in my 30's or 40's. And I have some anxiety because of my current job and money situation. I had a very good job in the 1990's, but have been working on a consulting basis since.

Though I have to admit I like some of the advantages of being single, and would not want to give up the advantages except for someone who is really right for me.

You can see a lot that I have shared about myself in my journal. In particular I have shared about my religious issues. And I have shared some rather personal things about myself.

It helps a lot being my age that I am able to accept myself as I am.

I live in San Diego. Perhaps we might meet some time at a gathering for Southern California DUer's. I have been to a few such gatherings; however I think the last such gathering for me was in June 2004.

I would appreciate any encouragement or kind words as far as women are concerned.

I am always amazed at the sort of responses I get to these more serious threads....

Encouragement? Sounds to me as though you would make some very lucky woman a lovely husband....

Tall, strong, smart, educated.........

Are there any nice single women in your branch of the Sierra Club?

Or any group that you're part of?

You're in the prime of your life...lots of years left!

I would suggest that you not worry about being in a relationship.......Just keep your eyes open, and have some fun while you're at it!

I agree that I think that is the best advice.

I want to have fun, and let whatever happens happen. I realize the worst thing is to try to force something to happen, or to be desperate.

Yes, there are some nice women in the Sierra Club, the San Diego Tall Club, and in my local chapter of the Democratic club.

Thanks very much, Peggy.:-)

60. Mike, you're far away but you should read post #56. : - )
Not trying to start anything here necessarily, but I just wanted to tell you that you should never give up hope that the right lady is out there for you.

My early natural preference for tall men (my daughter's dad is 6'6" and my last ex is 6'4-1/2") may have shifted to guys I can look in the eye, but few people ever fully get over the natural chemistry with the types they are most drawn to, IMO.

And the best types of people in my experience do not really judge any prospective partner on the physical issues alone -- or even predominantly. I used to say when I first started meeting people on the internets that I would probably be fine with loving a guy who was two feet tall and with his ears where his eyes should be IF I really loved who he was inside!

Like many other women, and in spite of the pressure in our society to demand that men be wealthy or powerful (or both) or at least have a great job and late-model car, I have never cared about a man's finances nearly as much as I care about his innermost nature. Even though I was "quite the fox" in my younger years and it seemed I could attract almost any man's interest if I wanted to, I dated only a scant few men who were rolling in money or owned expensive homes or cars.

All I'm really saying is, a lot of women value substance over appearance and inner value over "net worth" -- and the older people get, the more this is likely to be true, I believe.

As someone else here said, you really are "just getting ripe" and you sound like a great plum for some lucky lady to me. ;) Don't be surprised if someone with all the qualities YOU like in women happens by your way and recognizes a good thing when she sees it ... any time now. :hi:

(I love San Diego. Had relatives in Escondido for many years, spent the summer of my 15th year with them and visited SD several times. When I was 24 (in 1974), I hitchhiked to southern CA and then bought a touring bicycle and rode solo up the coast from San Juan Capistrano to somewhere in the middle of nowhere, about midstate I think. Never have forgotten what a great scenic ride that was and how much there was to enjoy in CA's natural beauty and climate, and a lot of its people.)

I would simply suggest that you enjoy life and be open to the possibilities, and you'll find what you want before too long. :loveya: :hi:

104. Thanks very much for your kind words, Vicki
I do have to admit that my job and financial situation is a source of anxiety for me.

Some of the problems I had when I was young included problems at some of my early jobs, which at the time made it hard for me to develop self-confidence. I also had a very critical and judgmental father, who did many good things, but who was many times very poor at understanding a difficult situation from my point of view.

Also on another board at which I post, a personal interest board, I at one time indicated my discouragement about my prospects as far as women are concerned, and mentioned that at the time I was between jobs, and a not very nice woman poster on the board felt it was her business and duty to scold me and remind me that women are not going to be attracted to a man who does not have a job, and to judge me because of my circumstances (which she knew nothing about). However that particular woman had some very serious issues of her own; one of her posts was a real doosie.

I would simply suggest that you enjoy life and be open to the possibilities, and you'll find what you want before too long.

Yes, I think that is the best advice.

And even if I do not find someone who is right for me, there are worse things.

Thanks very much.:loveya:

Unfortunately, now that I am older and do not qualify as "hot," I find that my requirements have necessarily diminished to only two: a pulse and no recent felony convictions.

56. Those are few and far between, eh, Peggy?
I couldn't help but be reminded by your list of criteria of a bit of writing I did in 1994. I was "between men," which I knew never lasted long due to my weakness for them -- and particularly the "bad boys" who always just blew my idealistic illusions within months, if not sooner.

So I pulled out my legal pad and started writing.

"What I Want In A Man"

I still have those pages somewhere in my old writings box, but I can remember that several of my items were in your list too. Maybe all of them! :D

The sad part of it is, once I'd finished that bit of introspective writing, I realized I was dreaming if I thought I'd ever actually FIND a man like that. Or if I did find one, he'd be married already, which makes him absolutely OFF LIMITS to me due to my own respect for other women. (I won't even date guys who are single but still pining for an old flame or hoping to get back with an ex-wife or dating someone regularly who might turn into a more serious romance any time now.)

That alone knocks out a lot of guys from consideration, of course, but I'm okay with that. I just never wanted a guy who would seek another woman while they're still with one -- that kind will inevitably do the same thing again behind MY back eventually. Why waste my time and invest my heart?

I like men who are verbal -- but who will let me talk some too, and actually LISTEN. My second husband told me that my voice was "like a sleeping pill" to him; and I'd often pour out my heart in long rambles in bed at night, only to hear him start snoring and realize I had indeed "put him to sleep"!

I learned at age 19 then not to talk so much, or if I did, at least in equal portions solicit input from a guy and pay attention to what he said, understand how he felt. No relationship is healthy if one partner does all the "sharing" of intimate feelings and the other one stays closed up like a book, anyway.

I like men who are self-supporting and independent -- but who actually WANT a woman to complete their lives and enhance it.

I like a man who doesn't need to control me in order to have respect for himself.

I used to like tall, strong men, but that preference has shifted over the years to men who are about my own height or a little bit taller, because there's just something about being "nose to nose and toe to toe" with a guy that seems to make for a more equal partnership and great "communication" (if you get my double entendre, there ;)).

Still like 'em strong but they really MUST be able to admit to weaknesses and ask for help if they need it. Even if it's only for directions!

I'm one of the many women who had an abusive father, but he was one who was also handsome as sin, wore a uniform (Highway Patrol) and a gun, and had a lot of great qualities about him (that were sadly subdued a lot of the time under his arrogance and hairtrigger temper fits).

So in my younger years I was always being drawn to bad-boy types who showed their true colors at some point and made my life a living hell. Learned my lesson over and over again, trying what I thought were "new" types of guys -- but every time it turned out that the same bad qualities were just dressed up differently, or came in a different form, not so easily recognizable.

Finally, in my early 50's and after my last marriage had lasted 15+ years (and we parted amicably and remained friends), I decided that I would break my pattern if I could or else simply remain aloof and alone and independent as long as I could.

No more bad boys. No more heartbreak and disillusionment and turmoil. No more trauma drama and tears on the pillow.

It's been GREAT now since 2003, and I haven't really even MISSED having a man for the most part! Amazing. Never thought I could do that, but I didn't even actually TRY real hard to get to this place ... it was just time for it to happen in my life.

I'm not closed to the possibility of a final, lasting, close relationship of the romantic type, but I'm not looking for it either. I can still appreciate the appeal of the bad boys, but from a distance. :D Good men draw me and interest me now, and after all these years of responding to the wrong types, it's the decent ones who really turn me on now.

Most of them, of course, are married or "taken" in some way, so that's fine, I just appreciate their qualities but also keep my distance. If one like that ever does cross my path and the chemistry happens, well, we shall see.

But if not, I'm okay and will be okay with my friends and family and independence -- and of course my animals!

Life can be good and fulfilling without a partner; but of course it can be even better and more satisfying with the RIGHT partner. It's hard to deny that, IMO.

Oh my, look what you did, Peggy. Even before I've read them all, I know you sparked some great replies with this OP. Now you've got me revealing way too much about myself, too!

I don't mind, though; a little honest soul-baring on occasion is good for us, I believe. :loveya:   :hi:

Okay, lose the boy band, and we can talk. I prefer R&B ;-). By those old enough to vote.

>Hi I'm Evoman. I like fine Chilean wines, French cuisine, and long moonlight walks on the beach. I also like all of the Earth's children, world peace, and I like selflessly giving women back massages, and getting absolutely nothing in return.<

You are a truly giving man.
I'm the only woman in the world that doesn't give a crap about French cuisine. I'm a pizza or cheeseburgers kind of a chick. (I laugh in the face of hardening arteries.) The back massage thing? I'd prefer a pedicure. The last time I had one, the guy (!) giving me a hand massage -- I finally made him stop. It was just a little too good for me.

I'm looking for a guy (yeah, right, don't tell my husband,) that thinks my obsession with most sports is great, who thinks I look really cute with that roostertail of hair that inevitably happens when I fall asleep on the couch during the Sunday morning gasbag shows, that isn't completely appalled that I'm happiest in jeans.

>Haha...that shit gets them all the tim...oh man, am I still typing. Crap. Stop typing. Damn it, I always ruin all my prospects like this.<

You are the man, Evoman. Just the sense of humor alone should ensure lots of stunning female companionship!
