Stupid question re: work from home, data entry stuff

I'll get to the point. I'm a single dad who's in over his head and wondering how he's gonna pay his next bill. I do computer work for a living and was wondering what kind of part time action I could get. Doesn't seem like much out there but when I look I see lots of sites set up about working from home doing data entry. Thing is the sites look pretty sleazy and scammish. I mean, if this type of work was available (and why wouldn't it be) why wouldn't companies that needed it advertise regularly. I need some extra money but don't wanna get scammed. Thoughts?
