<Veterinarians said the dog -- who is named "Bylaw" -- has only a few days to get the surgery it needs, and the owner is trying to figure out a way to pay for the costly surgery.
The shooting happened Tuesday in the 4300 block of 44th Street in the Talmadge area of San Diego. A fight broke out, and a officer was trying to track down a shooter.
The shooting escaped for a while, causing the lockdown of a nearby school. As police attempted to apprehend the man, the Rottweiler allegedly approached an officer in a threatening manner, forcing the officer to shoot.
Now, one of the dog's front legs is shattered to the joint, and he is in the care of the County of San Diego Animal Services.
Spokeswoman Dawn Danielson said easing the dog's pain is all that can be done, and it will take a complicated $2,000 surgery to repair the leg. She said that needs to happen within the next few days.
"With all the lead and the way the bones are, maybe the blood flow may stop to the leg," Danielson said. "And then we may be looking at amputation, which is another option for the leg. Dogs do very well with three legs. So, it wouldn't be the worst thing to happen to the dog.">
