I am totally rooting for you guys. I'd *love* to see a Yankees-Dodgers series.

And is there something in the DU kool-aid tonight? Is it just me or are people even crazier than usual?

8. I never thought I'd find someone
here who didn't believe in the scientific method--it's enlightening.

I really think you're going to take the division--the NL race the last week has been totally amazing. And with the Mets reeling, it's a completely open run to the series!

28. Yeah
Worst-case scenario, we tie for the wild card and have a one-game playoff Monday.

I don't want to settle for the wild card, though. It's like getting honorable mention.

I'm not much of a fan of it, myself, but you've got to take advantage of the rules, right?

31. Three, to be exact
I think.

But, still... I go back to the '60s, when it was just two leagues. You either won the pennant or you went home.

Hard to let go of some of that stuff.

32. Preaching to the choir, man
I don't get as far back as you do, but I'm a real student of the game. I've got some Jackie Robinson rookie cards in my closet. I'd much prefer things with no wild card, no astroturf, no DH and no divisions. I guess we'd have to contract some teams, but the level of the competition would be so much better...

33. The wild card's the one change I'm okay with
If they had to expand again, making two divisions unwieldy, the wild-card format was the logical solution.

OTOH, I don't really see a problem with two eight-team divisions. After all, baseball had two eight-team leagues for decades, followed by seven or eight seasons, depending on which league, of two 10-team leagues.

But of all the things they've done in the relentless pursuit of Mo' Money, the wild card is the least damaging to the game.

IMHO, o' course.

35. Yeah, and it's sure made them a lot of money
The thing that pisses me off the most is that there isn't a rule mandating that the money that the teams like the yankees and the red sox and the mets and the dodgers send to "small-market" teams (like billionaire Twins owner Carl Pohlad) be reinvested in the teams rather than simply being pocketed by the greedy owners.

You'd think there would be.

But then, since the owners make the rules...

37. The NFL has revenue-sharing
Which is socialism, if you look at that way. Ironic, considering how rife with freepers pro sports, and especially football, is. :-)

It would be interesting to see if the same practices in baseball would alter the postseason landscape. There have been teams with small payrolls making it far, but they are the exception and not the rule.
