Gratuitous Ranting Grinch Post...
Is it just me, or does the commercialization of the holidays drag other's down also?

I finally bit the bullet and started my x-mas shopping this week. Why rush into things.

Yesterday I broke down and did something I said I would not do: I went into a large shopping mall here. GASP!

As I entered through one of the anchor stores (Hecht’s I think) I was assaulted by a massive floor display of Totally Unnecessary Kitchen Appliances. There were stacks of every conceivable counter-cluttering "convenience" appliance imaginable. You know the ones. There were ten varieties of George Foreman fat-reducing grills, George Foreman "Lean Mean" Roasting Machines, George Foreman rotisseries; I think there was even a combo box containing a grill, rotisserie and coffee maker. What the fuck?! Low-fat coffee?!

Then there was the "Electric Smores Maker". Now you can share “quality time” with your family by sitting around shoveling pure carbohydrates into your mouths while staring at six to eight hours of mind-numbing reality TV. Give me a fucking break! If you or your kids really need to eat marshmallows and chocolate melted on graham crackers, at least take your lazy ass outside and build a campfire like we did when were kids!

My reason for braving the mall in the first place was to get to a store that specializes in clothes for tall women. My wife has wanted a new floor-length robe and I thought I might score one at the Tall Girl Shop. As it turned out, the few robes they had were about as sexy and fashionable as something left over at a K-Mart clearance sale. One actually had dirt on it like someone used it as a dust rag in the back room.

I walked out into the mall (maul?) and wandered around for a while and was struck by how lifeless everyone seemed. Everyone seemed to have an exhausted deer-in-the-headlights look on his or her faces as they wandered about trying to gather as much “stuff” as they could before the clock ran down.

I don’t know if it’s my annual seasonal affective “issues” or my absolute dislike of climate-controlled, community-destroying mega malls, but I just had to get the hell out of there.

So: back past Old Navy, the GAP, and Athlete’s Foot. Past the kiosks selling sunglasses, cell phone accessories, and NASCAR driver bobble heads. Past the Tall Girl Shop of Expensive, Ugly & Dirty Clothing. Back into Hecht’s and past display after display of cheap (but expensive) Gift Items for People You Don't Really Care About. Left turn in the makeup department. Suffer another nasal assault resulting from simultaneous shopper sampling of every single perfume/cologne/fragrance available (mix Opium, Eternity, White Diamonds, Organza, CK, etc and what do you get? CRAP!). Finally, past the essential quesadilla, smoothie and pizza makers, and out into the night.

I’m not a religious person, so I have a hard time getting into the whole Baby Jesus and the Three Wise Guys in the manger thing - and the constant repetition of lame Christmas songs either get me down or gets on my nerves, i.e. “Little Drummer Boy”. A-rumpa-pum-pum THIS!

Is it just me, or do others share my growing antipathy towards American’s blatant consumerism – especially this time of year when it seems to peak in an orgy of spending on worthless shit??

GOD! I’m feeling like a total Grinch! Little Cindy Loo Who where are you?!

2. Well, you write about it well
I hate shopping in malls so much that I do my shopping on line for most things.

What you should do is sit down with your wife and find a web site that offers clothes she likes and let her pick what she wants. If you want to surprise her with something, how about that alternative jewelry store across town or on Main Street (that's not in the mall). Get something that you know will fit.

I'd rather that than have my husband come home all tensed up in a lousy mood because he hates Christmas shopping.

12. You, too, eh?
"Holly Jolly Christmas" makes me want to throw things.

Note my sig line.

And "A Sleigh-Ride Together With You" annoys the crap out of me!

Actually, "Sleigh Ride" was a short orchertral piece written for the Boston Pops by Leroy Anderson in the middle of the 20th century. As Anderson wrote it, it isn't too bad. It was only when someone decided to turn it into a song and came up with a set of utterly emetic (look it up) lyrics that it became intolerable.

7. Wow. I actually started humming the theme to the Grinch...
Your antipathy towards the holiday season only affects you if you let it. The typical glass half full/glass half empty paradox.

Personally, I enjoy a little bit of consumerism (note - a little bit). People like gadgets. Me included. And stores wouldn't be selling this stuff if there was not a market for it. The gadgets that are worth having will stay around for a few years. The ones that aren't? They will be your "Salad Spinners" of the future. Some people enjoy buying this stuff. Why take their enjoyment away? And if you can invent the "new improved gadget that everyone has to have", more power to you and I hope you invest well.

And for those people who don't enjoy shopping in "climate-controlled, community-destroying mega malls"? More power to them. No one MADE them go there, as distasteful as it might have been. It was their choice.

Hope your mood for the rest of the season is on an upward trend...

9. Thanks. And speaking of salad spinners...
Beleive it or not - we are still using the SAME salad spinner we got as a wedding present 11 years ago - and I love it? It's made by Zyliss, and uses a pull cord (like a lawn mower) instead of crazy cranks and gears (http://www.zylissusa.com/). Damn those Swiss make some good stuff...

8. I love the holidays and I love the shopping
We spent most of Saturday and half of Sunday in the Mall finishing our Christmas shopping. We bought several of the gadgets you mention. My favorite is the wine bottle opener that is fast and fool proof. I also got a very nice pillow that is designed to make it easier to read or watch TV in bed.

I like to go to the mall and watch the other people that are shopping. Many of them are having a good time with friends and family as part of the total holiday experience. Many of them are very fine looking women that it is a joy to look at. A few of them are just plain goofy. All are fun to observe.

Christmas music generally does not do much for me, but I love the old hymns and Linus explaining the true meaning of Christmas to Charley Brown brings a tear to my eye every single year without fail. I love the season, the food, the shopping, family, etc. I really don't get the people who don't enjoy this time of year.
