Have I told you (lately) about my grandson?

Jack turned 1 1/2 yesterday. He and mommy and daddy arrived from Boston Sunday.
He says he had a swell time on the airplanes and in the Atlanta terminal.
Mommy and daddy looked a little fatigued.
We have a six-pack iced down in the car, and a chilled bottle of Chablis, so mommy and daddy are in better spirits at the end of the one hour drive home.

On Monday they are resurfacing the street in front of our house. Jack and I sit in the front yard and watch for over an hour. It is the longest grandpa has seen him sit (relatively) still since his arrival. We watch the big yellow machines go back and forth, spreading and rolling asphalt. Jack calls them "choo-choos". The car is also a choo-choo, as is his stroller. Anything with wheels is a choo-choo.

This morning we borrow a half bag of Nasha-the-Dog's Ol' Roy dry food and go down to the dock to feed the sea gulls. Jack is still in his feety PJs, but it is 70 degrees, and he is fine. Since we are on a bay, and not the sea, grandpa calls them bagels (bay-gulls;-)). Jack doesn't get it, but thinks grandpa is pretty funny anyway. Earlier this morning grandpa broke up a fight between two of the neighbor's cat by yelling and waving a towel at them. Jack laughed so hard he got the hiccups.

There are no birds by the dock at first. Jack throws some Ol' Roy into the water. Then here comes one gull, and then two, and then four, and then Jack is surrounded by a cloud of swooping, whooping birds. Jack is laughing so hard he almost falls in the water. Mommy, daddy, two grannies, and grandpa are watching over him, so he knows that if he falls in five bodies will hit the water a split second after he does. Jack is a very considerate boy, so he does not step off the edge just to see all the fun.

Life is good.

I can't wait for my nephew Zach to get here Sunday. My arms having been missing hugging him since they left the Friday after Thanksgiving. His sweet smile what makes me want to keep fighting when ever I think about giving up.

12. Posted a while back, but since you asked...

A grandpa by any other name...

Jack lives near Boston, Massachusetts, and we live 1500 miles away in coastal Alabama. He is our first and only grandchild, the son of our only child, his mommy. In spite of the great distance, we managed to arrive at Jack's house a couple of hours after mommy and daddy brought him home from the hospital. We are eager to watch him grow and developed, so plans are made to visit every three months.

Jack is 17 months old now, and starting to talk, sort of. The kitty is "Kee" and a ball is "baw". If he wants something that he can't reach, he points and says "dis".

We have patiently awaited Jack's beginning experiments in oral communication with high anticipation. You see, we don't have names yet. We'd prefer reasonable derivatives of Grandpa and Grandma. I'd rather not be Pee-Paw or Poo-Paw, if at all possible.

During our last visit, it occurred to me that Jack might not know who these big people are who periodically show up at his house for a week or so. On a Saturday afternoon we were all gathered in the living room. I put Jack on my knee.
"Jack. Do you know who I am?"
Thoughtful stare.
"I'm your mommy's daddy."
More thoughtful staring.
"Jack has a mommy and daddy, and Jack's mommy has a mommy and daddy. Where's mommy?"
Jack points to mommy. Bright lad.
"Where's daddy?"
Jack points to his dad. This kid is an Einstein.
"So...see? I am mommy's daddy."
No comment.

A few hours later I returned from a trip to the grocery and walked into the kitchen. Jack was there, with mommy. He looked up at me, smiled, pointed, and said "MOMMYDADDY!"
Oh my.

14. You just never know...

My nephew calls my dad "Bobpa", a combo of "Bob" and "Grandpa", to help distinguish him from my brother-in-law's parents.

It's a mixed bag; my mom got to be "grandma", and my brother-in-law's mom got to be "old grandma".

She's less than thrilled, but what can ya do? :)

15. When I told

my gr'grandson I was his "gramma" he cried for his "real" gramma , my daughter. Kid hated me for a long time but he loves me now We got it all straightened out <smile>

Grandpa is not a deist, but I enjoy this time for what it does bring to me. Sometimes it makes me sad to read posts from those of us who don't have that.
