Waukesha - A woman with a history of alcohol abuse and drug use was sentenced Monday to two years in prison for attacking a Waukesha couple she didn't know with a metal pooper scooper and scissors in a bizarre middle-of-the-night assault.
Waukesha County Circuit Judge Lee S. Dreyfus Jr. also ordered Leisa K. Reed, 47, of Waukesha to serve five years of extended supervision after her prison term for second-degree reckless endangerment in the June attack.
"You were a person who was out of control," Dreyfus told Reed, who wept throughout much of her hour-long sentencing.
"You don't know why it occurred. You don't know how you got there."
Waukesha residents John and Linda Dormer do not know Reed and kept telling her that she was in the wrong house, John Dormer told a reporter after the incident.
Reed kept saying that someone was going to kill her, and she threatened to kill the Dormers, he said.
The criminal complaint says Reed told authorities that she smoked crack cocaine before the attack.
Assistant District Attorney Michele Hulgaard urged Dreyfus to send Reed to prison, citing her history of drunken driving and domestic violence and repeated trips through the criminal justice system, which resulted in four periods of probation.
"Clearly, this is an individual who is a ticking time bomb," Hulgaard said.
"I have very little optimism for her success."
Defense attorney Christine Hansen said the unusual incident occurred not because Reed wanted to harm anyone, but because she happened to walk through an unlocked door looking for help when she was experiencing an inexplicable "state of excited delirium."
