7. How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away?
How Can I Miss You (When You Won't Go Away)

By Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks

I've talked to your mother and I've talked to your dad,
They say they've tried but it's all in vain.
I've begged and I've pleaded, I even got mad,
Now we must face it, you give me a pain.

chorus:
How can I miss you when you won't go away?
I keep telling you day after day,
But you won't listen, you always stay and stay,
How can I miss you when you won't go away?

Out of three billion people, why must it be me?
OhOh why, oh why won't you cut me loose?
D Do me a favor and listen to my plea
I'm not the only chicken in the roost.

Your never-ending presence really cramps my style,
I dream that it won't always be the same.
At first I was attracted, but after a while,
Have you ever heard of a "hard to get" dame?"

57. Add "Superhero" to that list
Sleep walking through the all-nite drug store
baptized in fluorescent light
I found religion in the greeting card aisle
now I know hallmark was right
and every pop song on the radio
is suddenly speaking to me
art may imitate life
but life imitates t.v.
'cuz you've been gone exactly two weeks
two weeks and three days
and let's just say that things look different now
different in so many ways

I used to be a superhero
no one could touch me
not even myself
you were like a phone booth
that I somehow stumbled into
and now look at me
I am just like everbody else

if I was dressed in my best defenses
would you agree to meet me for coffee
if I did my tricks with smoke and mirrors
would you still know which one was me
if I was naked and screaming
on your front lawn
would you turn on the light and come down
screaming, there's the asshole
who did this to me
stripped me of my power
stripped me down

I used to be a superhero
no one could hurt me
not even myself
you were like a phone booth
that I somehow stumbled into
and now look at me
I am just like everybody else

yeah you've been gone exactly two weeks
two weeks and three days
and now I'm a different person
different in so many ways
tell me what did you like about me
don't say my strength and daring
'cuz now I think I'm at your mercy
and it's my first time for this kind of thing

I used to be a superhero
I would swoop down and save me
from myself
but you were like a phone booth
that I somehow stumbled into
and now look at me
I am just like everybody else

27. Well, that one...
it came out when I was a teenager, and it was kinda famous just for the title.

Spooky Tooth included Gary Wright, later to record "Dream Weaver," and Mick Jones, who would go on to be a founding member of Foreigner. So it wasn't exactly a great band.

I went through my playlist yesterday looking for a song to contribute to that 'love songs' thread and that's when I realized that ALL my song are either break-up songs or F-you songs. Oh well. Probably shouldn't post my whole playlist...

I think the most heart-rending one I have is "Black" by Pearl Jam

this is the unplugged version...apparently there is no video, so I can't post the studio version, but this song is so wrenchingly beautiful

51. I love that song
It had long been my favorite off of the Ten album, and then I can remember it coming on the radio when I was driving home after a particularly painful break-up I had just gone through, and hearing it just messed me up more than I can describe. I guess it was therapeutic or something, though, as it's still one of my favorite songs.

26. "if the phone doesn't ring, it's me" by Jimmy Buffett
Not a hate filled song, just more of a coping song...

It's too bad we can't turn
And live in the past
If the phone doesn't ring
It's me

I've had good days and bad days
And goin' half mad days
I try to let go but you're still on my mind
I've lost all the old ways
I'm searchin' for new plays
Puttin' it all on the line

Lots of new friends with the same old problems
Open your eyes you might see
If our lives were that simple
We'd live in the past
If the phone doesn't ring
It's me

If the phone doesn't ring
You'll know that it's me
I'll be out in the eye of the storm
If the phone doesn't ring
You know that I'll be
Where someone can make me feel warm

Of course, Bob Dylan mastered these kinds of songs.

Also by the bard:

"Don't Think Twice, It's Alright"
"Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)"
"I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)"
"Simple Twist Of Fate"
"Most Of The Time"

... and so many more.

If I can´t beat you then

To a pulp
So can the TV rays and take
my tonsil glaze
Right down your throat

You´re standin´ too close what the

You ain´t my old lady and
you ain´t a tattoo
No need to whimper, no need to shout
This party´s over, so get the fuck out
Get the fuck out

Well I puke, I stink bitch give me a drink
´Cause I´m payin´ for the room
I ain´t buying you breakfast
So keep your mouth busy and
wrap your lips
All around my attitude

Take a walk with me with your triple

And your 40-foot do
Why you walkin´ funny you must have
spent some time
With the boys in the crew

You´re standin´ too close what the

If I find you here when I wake up
The maid is gonna find me dead

Peter Holsapple has written a lot of great break-up songs but this is my favorite:

"She took his car
She took his bike
She took everything
She thought he liked
And what she couldn'take
She found a way to break
But she left his amplifier"

I've often wondered what the guy did to deserve that.

I could spend all day writing about my other favorites

43. Tom Waits, "Strange Weather"
Will you take me across the Channel,
London Bridge is falling down.
Strange a woman tries to save
What a man will try to drown.
And it's the rain that they predicted,
It's the forecast every time.
The rose is dying because you picked it
And I believe that brandy's mine.

And all over the world
Strangers
Talk only about the weather.
All over the world
It's the same

The world is getting flatter,
The sky is falling all around.
And nothing is the matter
For I never cry in town.
A love like ours, my dear,
Is best measured when its down.
And I never buy umbrellas,
For there's always one around.

And all over the world
Strangers only talk about the weather.
All over the world
It's the same

And you know that its beginning,
And you know that its the end
Once again we are strangers
As the fog comes rolling in.

And all over the world
Strangers talk only about the weather.
All over the world
It's the same

And another: "The Sweetest Embrace", Nick Cave & Barry Adamson:

Our time is done my love
We've laid it all to waste
One thousand moonlit kisses
can't sweeten this bitter taste
My desire for you is endless
and I'll love you 'till we fall
I just don't want you no more
and that's the sweetest embrace of all

To think we can find happiness
hidden in a kiss
Ah, to think we can find happiness
that's the greatest mistake there is
There is nothing left to cling to babe
There is nothing left to soil
I just don't want you no more
and that's the sweetest embrace of all

Ooohhh where did it begin
When all we did was lose
There's nothin' left to win

So lay your weapons down
they serve no purpose in your hands
And if you wanna hold me
then go ahead and hold me
I won't upset your plans
If it's revenge you want
then take it babe
Or you can walk right out the door
I just don't care anymore
And that's the sweetest embrace of all

Ooohhh where did it begin
When all we did was lose
There's nothin' left to win

It's over babe
And it really is a shame
We are losers you and me babe
In a rigged and crooked game
My desire for you is endless
And I love you most of all
I just don't want you no more
and that's the sweetest embrace of all

47. "Feelin' Stronger Every Day" by Chicago
It's upbeat, but not exactly happy; I guess it's more of a post break-up song. For a nice, miserable break-up song by Chicago, there's "Hard Habit to Break." Then there's "I'll be There" by the Jackson 5, which is a sweet break-up song, almost unrealistically so! "Standing in the Shadows of Love" by the 4 Tops is one of the most miserable break-up songs ever, and one of my favorites. "Smoke" and "Song for the Dumped" by Ben Folds Five are two interesting break-up songs from the same album; one is more sad and the other is more pissed-off.

48. "Another Day" - Roy Harper
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 06:00 AM by Kutjara
There's a hauntingly beautiful cover version by Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel on YouTube at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKknfE4wGmM

The lyrics are:

Another Day

written by Roy Harper

Peter:

The kettle's on, the sun has gone another day.
She offers me Tibetan tea on a flower tray.
She's at the door, she wants to score,
She dearly needs to say,

Kate:

I loved you a long time ago, you know,
where the wind's own forget-me-nots blow
but I just couldn't let myself go
not knowing what on earth there was to know.
But I wish that I had,
'cos I'm feeling so sad
that I never had one of your children.

Peter:

And across the room inside a tomb
a chance is waxed and wanes.
The night is young, why are we so hung up
in each others chains.
I must take her, I must make her
while the dove domains
and feel the juice run as she flies
run my wings under her sighs
as the flames of eternity rise
to lick us with the first-born lash of dawn.

Kate:

Oh really my dear
I can't see what we fear
sat here with ourselves in-between us.

Peter:

And at the door we can't say more
than just another day

Kate:

And without a sound
I turn around
and I walk away.

50. "The Shadow of Your Smile"
The shadow of your smile
When you are gone
Will colour all my dreams
And light the dawn

Look into my eyes, my love, and see
All the lovely things, you are, to me

Our wistful little star
It was far, too high
A teardrop kissed your lips
And so, so did I

Now when I remember spring
All the joy that love can bring
I will be remembering
The shadow of your smile

Ole Blue Eyes, of course...

It's always the one that comes to mind when I think of breakups.

Someone already mentioned "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" by Paul Simon, but it's a favorite of mine because it offers a lot of practical ways you can actually LEAVE! :D

And I guess I can't list any of my own songs because none of you have ever heard them! (Those who have seem to agree that "Master of Lies" is my best on that topic.)

Chance after chance after chance I gave you
Lie after lie after lie you told me
Why did I think I could truly save you?
I should have known not to buy what you sold me

Lies Lies Lies
You're the master of lies
And a woman who loves you
and believes you
Is a woman who cries.

63. Sure, why not?
Whatever you consider a break-up song will qualify.

I haven't heard your music. Is there somewhere I can go to hear it?

68. Not right now.
I have some old recordings, made before 1993 when my house and little recording studio burned down. :(

I'm not performing around town anymore, and a few of the songs I've written that were covered by other artists and heard on the radio at one time never "made the bigtime," so I'm not even sure those can be found.

I'm one of those singers who, like Carly Simon, has always had such a bad case of "stage fright" that I never was able to pursue a career in music with the same passion that I had for the music itself. She overcame the handicap her stage fright caused her, but I never did.

Just hundreds of songs I've written and sung over the past 40 years, some of which my friends and a few locals seem to like a lot and sometimes request. :)

:hi: Thanks for asking, though!

53. "the most beautiful girl" charlie rich
or "i'm not in love" by 10cc

Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did was she crying, cryin?
Hey, if you happen to see the most beautiful girl, that walked out on me
Tell her I'm sorry, tell her I need my baby
Oh, won't you tell her, that I love her.

I woke up this morning, and realized what I had done
I stood alone in the cold gray dawn
And I knew I'd lost my morning sun
I lost my head and I said some things
Now come the heartaches that the morning brings
I know I'm wrong and I couldn't see
I let my world slip away from me.

Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did was she crying, cryin?
Hey, if you happen to see the most beautiful girl, that walked out on me
Tell her I'm sorry, tell her I need my baby
Oh, won't you tell her, that I love her.

Did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did was she crying, cryin?
Hey, if you happen to see the most beautiful girl, that walked out on me
Tell her I'm sorry, tell her I need my baby
Oh, won't you tell her, that I love her

Did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did was she crying, cryin?

56. Jim Croce - "One Less Set of Footsteps"
Well we've been runnin away from
Somethin we both know
Weve long run out of things to say
And I think I better go

So dont be getting excited
Oh when you hear that slammin door
Cause therell be one less set of footsteps
On your floor in the mornin

And weve been hidin from somethin
That should have never gone this far
But after all its what weve done
That makes us what we are

And you been talkin in silence
But if its silence you adore
There'll be one less set of footsteps
On your floor in the mornin

Well baby one less set of footsteps on your floor
One less man to walk in
One less pair of jeans upon your door
One less voice a-talkin

They say that tomorrows a dream away
And today has turned to dust
Your silver tongue has turned to clay
And your golden rule to rust

If thats the way that you want it
Well that's the way I want it more
Well there'll be one less set of footsteps
On your floor in the mornin

Well there'll be one less set of footsteps on your floor
One less man to walk in
One less pair of jeans upon your door
One less voice a-talkin

They say thatt tomorrows a dream away
And today has turned to dust
Your silver tongue has turned to clay
And your golden rule to rust

If thats the way that you want it
Well that's the way I want it more
Cause baby one less set of footsteps

Oh baby one less set of footsteps
On your floor in the mornin

64. "Adieu" by Yoko Kanno
Been a fool, been a clown
Lost my way from up and down
And I know, yes I know
And I see it in your eyes
That you really weren't suprised at me at all
Not at all
And I know by your smile it's you.

Don't care for me, don't cry
Let's say goodbye, Adieu.
It's time to say goodbye, I know that in time
It will just fade away, it's time to say goodbye.

I stand alone, and watch you fade away like clouds
High up and in the sky
I'm strong and so cold
As I stand alone
Goodbye, So long, Adieu.

Oh how I love you so, lost in those memories
And now you've gone
I feel the pain, feeling like a fool, Adieu

My love for you burns deep
Inside me, so strong
Embers of times we had
And now here I stand lost in a memory
I see your face and smile.

Oh how I love you so, lost in those memories
And now you've gone
I feel the pain, feeling like a fool, Adieu

My love for you burns deep
Inside me, so strong
Embers of times we had
And now here I stand lost in a memory
I see your face and smile.

65. "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," Neil Sedaka, comes to mind...
Don't take your love away from me
Don't you leave my heart in misery
If you go then I'll be blue
'Cause breaking up his hard to do

Remember when you held me tight
And you kissed me all through the night
Think of all that we've been through
Breaking up is hard to do

They say that breaking up is hard to do
Now I know, I know that it's true
Don't say that this is the end
Instead of breaking up I wish that we were making up again

I beg of you, don't say goodbye
Can't we give our love another try
Come on baby, let's start anew
'Cause breaking up is hard to do

66. Of course, it depends on the nature of the break-up.
Who is the dumper, who is the dumpee?

I find "At This Moment" by Billy Vera and the Beaters to be a sad, beautiful, heart-wrenching song full of pain and resolve.

Can't find it on youtube, but an OK version by Clay Aiken is here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKC5e5WHM9M

Still doesn't come close to the original, though.

70. Don't give me grief over this one but
"Throwing It All Away" by Genesis. If just for the lines...

"But when it's late at night
And you call my name
The only sound you'll hear
IS the sound of your voice calling
Just calling out to me."

A very sad and sentimental way to tell someone to fuck off I think.

71. It's Too Late by Carole King
Stayed in bed all morning just to pass the time
There's something wrong here, there can be no denying
One of us is changing, or maybe we've stopped trying

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it

It used to be so easy living here with you
You were light and breezy and I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy, and I feel like a fool

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it

There'll be good times again for me and you
But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it too
Still I'm glad for what we had, and how I once loved you

But it's too late, baby, it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it

You wore out a brand new trunck
packing and Un- packin' your junk
Your Daddy's mad
He's done got Peeeeeeeeeved!
You're gonna change or I'm A-Gonna Leave!

This ain't right, and that is wrong
Ya just keep raggin' All the Day Long
It's gotta stop
I don't mean Pleeeeeeeeeeease!
You're gonna change or I'm A-Gonna Leave!

You're gonna change your way of livin,' change the things you do
Stop doing all the things that you Oughtn't Do
You're Daddy's mad
He's done got Peeeeeeeeeved!
You're gonna change or I'm A-Gonna Leave!

Every time that you get mad
You pack your rags and run back to Dad
You tell him lies
He don't belieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeve!
You're gonna change or I'm A-Gonna Leave!

The way to keep a woman happy and make her do what's right
is love her every morning, ball her OUT at night
You're Daddy's mad
He's done got Peeeeeeeeeved!
You're gonna change or I'm A-Gonna Leave!

78. I apologize for doing a show tune, but My Fair Lady
has a song, Without You, which is great. Part of it goes:

Without your pulling it the tide comes in
Without your twirling it the earth can spin
Without your pushing them the clouds roll by
If they can do without you, Ducky, so can I!
I shall not feel alone without you
I can stand on my own without you
So go back in your shell
I can do bloody well without you!

Edited on Fri Oct-06-06 06:05 AM by pokerfan
(You took one of my favorites, Puddle of Mudd's "She Hates Me.")

Didn't see any of these on the list:

Hit The Road Jack - Ray Charles
It's All Over Now - Rolling Stones
You're So Vain - Carly Simon

Nor my all-time personal favorite: (Get your tongue out of my mouth) I’m Kissing You Goodbye by Waylon Jennings:

I've learned to turn the other cheek
Is not what love's about
I've turned mine so many times
That I damned near wore 'em out
I've grown used to your abuse
And I thought I'd never quit
But I woke up this morning
Couldn't find my give-a-shit
You've always liked to play your games
Well I got one for you
Pretend we're playing checkers girl
And it's your time to move
You'll find your suitcase on the porch
And the taxi in the drive
Get your tongue out of my mouth
I'm kissing you goodbye

I see you've finally made it home
You been out all night
Your artificial hair's a mess
And your clothes don't fit you right

I've given and forgiven
Till there ain't nothing left
But all you gave was just enough
To satisfy yourself
I can smell that whiskey in your hair
And sen-sen on your breath
If you ever tried to tell the truth
You'd choke yourself to death
I don't want your nasty kisses
And don't tell me no more lies

Get your tongue out of my mouth
I'm kissing you goodbye
Get your tongue out of my mouth
I'm kissing you goodbye
