BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. -- Authorities said a fire at a Target store in Bonita Springs was started by a homeless man testing the quality of some women's clothing he intended to steal.
Ronald Butts was charged with arson Wednesday after reportedly confessing to starting the fire. Fire officials said he told them he was testing the clothing to see if they were made of cotton.
Fire officials said Butts told them he did not want polyester clothing.
It's not clear whether Butts could read the clothing tags to determine their material.Store employees extinguished the flames before firefighters arrived. Officials said the fire burned through a rack of women's clothing worth about $2,000.
Butts is being held in the Lee County jail on $10,000 bond.
