12. One mile, maybe.

I never liked bike riding.
I always had one as a kid but never really used it.

We would just walk if we wanted to go somewhere.

17. A follow up question if I may
Why do you hate bike riding and what alternative do you propose?

One of the many reasons I enjoy cycling is that is that using something other than a car for transportation fucks with those in charge. I'm from the Watergate "Follow the money" generation.

Oil producers give money to people I don't like. If the flow of money to oil producers decreases then the people I don't like will have less power.

Where is the flaw in my logic? Not being snarky, trying to generate a genuine dialogue here, even though I might not be on this board much longer tonight.

20. Just never got into bike riding.
Like I said, always had one as a kid and we would just walk or run.

As an adult, I really have no alternative to driving a car.
I drive a lot for work and can't depend of buses, trains or other forms of mass transit. I need to come and go as I please.

Plus where I live, there is nothing close by. It's all residential. No gas stations, no stores, no nothing unless I drive a few miles. Can't even get milk or cigs without driving somewhere.

22. Can't or won't?
"Close by" can mean a lot of things, why not specify exactly how far away the nearest store is so I can decide whether or not to give you the benefit of the doubt about whether or not you're part of the problem or part of the solution? It only takes a few seconds to decide that for yourself right? If you're not in the right place then why not move?

24. About two miles
to the nearest place to get even milk.
Lots of hills and windy roads.

I will not walk there or ride a bike.

So go ahead and call me part of the problem.

27. You're part of the problem
If you feel really guilty about it then pick up a copy of the MC5's Kick Out the Jams, listen to it and then decide whether or not you'd like to make more responsible choices.

Just for the record, a hilly two mile bike ride doesn't require much exertion, unless you're not in very good shape

29. I don't feel bad about it.
I don't think I am in good enough shape to ride a bike for two miles back and forth from place to place every time I needed something and then have to take shower after shower before heading off to work.

Who says you have to do all your shopping before work? We live in a free country. Shop whenever you want. Just be aware that the choices you make impact the world we live in. If you're not in good enough shape to ride a bike a few miles then change that. Your loved ones will thank you for it.

42. Some of us cannot ride bikes
because of health issues.

I have an economical car, I recyle, and I do my best to live green. But I can't take up biking because some twit on a message board feels really superior.

Save your judgmental bullshit for someone who cares.

52. my logic regarding Kick Out the Jams
I was referring to the album not the song, specifically the introduction where the announcer tells people that they have to choose their purpose on their planet and whether they're going to be part of the problem or part of the solution.

Personally I find that switching from an automobile to a bicycle is a simple and effective method of making the planet a better place.

Unfortunately, few people consider this option. This fact dismays and saddens me.

Does that clarify things?
