6. Just another day in Japan.

Christmas is nothing special to people here. I had to work both Christmas Eve and Day. Now I'm sitting here eating pizza for my Christmas dinner.

Anything and everything goes. I had a seafood pie once that was really good. They seem to really love corn on their pizza for some strange reason. :shrug:

Frankly, it's a relief not to have to worry about buying anything for anyone or pretending I like some last second piece of crap when I'd rather have cash.

It was kind of lame working overtime on Christmas Eve, but I called my family this morning and got it out of the way. Bring on Spring Festival.

8. The art of being alone but not lonely

(I ate 16 ounces of fudge tonite and may not sleep for days)

It really is an art, which I thankfully learned years ago. I hear my retired 64 year old neighbor's door open and shut about 50 times a day - afraid to sit down and be alone with himself for fear of the void he might find. I spend most days, by choice, alone and am never bored or lonely. Just spent all evening here at the computer listening to the entire Nutcracker Suite, Handel's Messiah, and other surprises thrown at me by an unknown Public Radio DJ. Simple pleasures can give one much calm, along with knowing the difference between "I want" and "I need". Decided to turn my TV off completely about 5 days ago, and have been discovering little adventures ever since. Next week I may shut down the computer and find even more.

I feel that I'm probably too comfortable with being alone... Bordering on agoraphobia.

I have my place here and intrusions are not as welcome as they used to be....

But, this might be the lack of sleep and beer talking at the moment.

21. I too am beginning to suspect

I am a borderline agoraphobic. Having transplanted myself a little over a year ago from my home of 27 years in Colorado, I keep to myself more often than not. Add to that no job and voila...isolation. The good news is, I like my company and know that '04 is going to bring many wonderful things.

11. I'm alone and will be until about noon.

My favorite cousin will be at my parents' house for Christmas dinner. I eschew such occasions -- they're all redneck assholes, and I'm not terribly popular, being the only liberal, the only reader, a vocal hater of TV, etc. -- but my favorite cousin is a genuinely decent guy. I'm going to surprise everyone by putting in an appearance. Not for long -- long enough to slip him my address and ask him to come over before he blows town, eat a plateful of food, and split -- but still, it will be fun to see the looks on their faces. LOL.

I spent the day with the Loved One, and came home to check mail etc, tend to the herd of cats, wash and sleep, and am going back over there once the sleep activity is completed.

I walked over to family where I live and watched kids open gifts but I really do like living alone. It takes a person that is so turned into such things.

Someone who understands! I felt that way for 23 years, even with two children. Now I really AM alone but this alone feels so much better than the other.

18. Me, too: I don't mind, it's sort of like my "Christmas Retreat..."

I can get caught up on reading, cleaning(if I get motivated), do some planning for 2004, meditate, walk the dog, listen to music, cuddle the dog, make phone calls to family out of state if I feel like it (or not), you name it... I can even take a break and ponder "the true meaning of Christmas"-- something I'd bet even church-goers are not really doing. They are just sitting there thinking of who they forgot to buy a gift for, who gave them a lousy gift, what is left to do for that big Christmas dinner, who has gained weight in the family since last year, how to keep the family drunk in line. You all know that's the case! LOL

I did some family things for Thanksgiving, but have very little still living and my out-of-state sister always works Christmas. So, I get to tune out a bit. At least I don't have to do all the frantic commercialized Christmas expectations.

The ONLY thing I hate is that so many people PITY people who are alone a Christmas-- It is absolutely a reflex. So, I don't let too many know that I'm doing the alone "retreat" thing.

I've always liked going to church early on Christmas Eve, or for midnight mass (if I go the Catholic route. But, when I look around, it just seems like people are enjoying the sights and sounds, but not really listening. Of course that may just be because I'm NOT! (that darn attention deficit disorder, you know!)....

and happy holidays!

This is a first for me; I don't think I've ever woken up Christmas morning without any other human in the house. It's fine, because I'm happiest by myself anyway. And I'm not really by myself. I had to shift 2 cats off of me to climb out of bed, and then scold the dog for curling up on the couch in the middle of the night when she thought I wouldn't catch her.

The sun is coming up and I'll be calling my mom out of state to wish her a merry christmas; she lives by herself. My sons will be here sometime tonight. I'll have my grandson for the day tomorrow.

Meanwhile, it's quiet, peaceful, and serene. I'm curled up with a cup of coffee and my computer and a book; the tom cat is teasing the dog, and the other cat is purring in my lap. I'm content.

To me, it's just another day. But - if any DUer could help me out with something, I'd appreciate it! I am trying to put an Einstein avatar in my signature line, and don't know how to do it. Plus, I don't have enough posts to start my own topic to ask this question!

27. Beer and a burrito for Christmas breakfast here...

My cat woke me up at 6:40 am. He didn't much go for the beer and burrito breakfast, but we're enjoying our Christmas morning (no work!) together, watching "Miracle on 34th Street."

And of course all my DU friends are right here at hand!

29. I heard a story yesterday

It was John McCain talking about one Christmas in the POW camp. The men sang carols and gave each other IOUs, things they wished the other could have. Whatever my differences with John McCain, it made me cry. These men had a Christmas like no other they would ever have, when the true meaning of Christmas was brought home to them.
It can be hard being alone, but it can also make you see things clearly. It is good to know the meaning of simple pleasures. When we are overwhelmed with "stuff" we don't appreciate anything.

I'm another one who prefers to be alone, as I find being around people very draining...my husband is on the road, but does not really mind, as neither one of us cares much for holidays. I've got my dogs & my cats & other assorted critters & some cold pizza to snack on.:-)
