Well, HEyHEY got a Mandolin
I've wanted to by one for a long time, but all this unemployment and stuff prevented that. Anyway, my folks bought me one for an xmas gift. Only thing, I know nothing about them and it is drastically out of tune. I play guitar, but I don't know how to tune this thing....anyone got any tips?

1. E-A-D-G
STrings 1 through 4 (starting at the high string). Tune the first two sets in unison. Strings 3 and 4 an octave apart.

13. Baker?
A grade-school music teacher was named Baker. Ever taught music in Huntington Beach, CA? Any relatives who might've?

I'd love to find him & thank him. He changed my life.

5. Hey, hey.
So happy you got your wish, but also happy I don't live next door to you. An untuned mandolin, my teeth are already on edge. :-)

6. is it rude to be jealous of a gift someone else received?
I am very happy for you.

Did you ever play violin/viola? If so that oughta make it easier.

Enjoy!!

16. An "A-style" is sorta oval or teardrop-shaped
An "F-style" (or Florentine) has a scroll on the upper bout, and a point on the two lower bouts. The headstock of an A is usually semi-rectangular ("snakehead") and on an F, it's very fancy with a little scroll. Bill Monroe played an F (a 1923 Lloyd Loar Gibson).

8. Awesome!
After you learn to play you will have to play some music for me.

I love the mandolin! And the Sitar.

So if theres a Sitar player out there, you could play for me too! :D

9. Violin and mandolin tuned exactly the same
G-D-A-E

So after you learn the mandolin, you'll be able to transfer the same fingering to a fiddle! I'm a fiddle player and was able to pick up the mandolin and immediately play a tune. (Although the rapid picking part is tougher than I realized!)

11. I actually plan to learn the Violin too.
I play guitar, and harmonica, and the pennywhistle a bit. I've wanted to know the mandolin and violin for so long. Seeing as how I have a mandolin now, I will take lessons for that for a while before getting a violin.

22. buy some jethro burns recordings ASAP....
....i know most country players think bill monroe hangs the mandolin moon, but he couldn't hold a candle to jethro burns. jethro was one half of the homer and jethro team of the 50's. he died 10 or 15 years ago. he was the greatest mandolin player ever....there's a recording of him playing jazz and swing tunes on a mandolin from his later years. he also played and toured with steve goodman in the 70's and 80's.
