Anyone know how much a brick costs?
I dug out and put in stone facing for three rows of terraced garden last year and started a walkway of old bricks I had. I ran out of bricks.

There is a pile of bricks in someone's yard that I've had my eye on for about 2 years. They haven't moved an inch, none have been added, none have gone away. They mow around the pile, which is to the side of an older home.

So I thought I'd knock on the door and see if they wanted to get rid of their pile of bricks. Best I can estimate is they have about 200 bricks.

Nothing special about the bricks. They are regular looking brick size, not glazed, no holes, just plain old red bricks. They look weathered but not used.

I dunno? Fifty bucks? A hundred bucks? What's a brick worth? Maybe I should just offer to haul them away if they want the pile cleaned out of their yard? I've got a truck.

2. Cleaned=removed from
Local language as a man might say. I believe that is called a colloquialism. That better?

3. Brick costings are usually given in square feet of coverage...
Edited on Sat Oct-28-06 05:15 PM by Kutjara
...rather than per brick. Here's a cost calculator based on a brick cost of about $0.17 per square foot for bricks alone:

http://www.gobricksoutheast.com/BrickAdvantage/CostCalculator/

I'll browse around a bit more and see what other prices I can come up with.

On edit: Here's another site that gives a cost per thousand of $380 or $.38 per brick.

http://www.maconline.org/export1.htm

Of course, these prices are for new, unused bricks, not ones that have been sitting around in the elements for a long time.

4. i would offer to haul them away as a favor
Edited on Sat Oct-28-06 05:14 PM by pitohui
i wouldn't offer to pay, might as well go to the store and order the exact bricks i want and have them delivered if i'm going to have to pay

however i've heard of people offering to haul away and re-use old bricks as a freecycle or re-cycling type deal

i can't see paying for the old bricks unless they are really something special, your good deed of the day is helping the people (i'm guessing older) remove these heavy items

even if they tell you not to take the bricks, because of your "knock on the door," at least they will be motivated to either finish their own project or have someone else in their family remove the bricks -- at least a polite "knock on the door" offering to "help" us with our yard has always been a great motivator to getting my husband to finish a project :-)

so you'll be doing your part to beautify the neighborhood even if you don't score the bricks

5. I'll chime in here
No sense paying for what has apparently been someone else's lawn trash for the past 2 years.

They will probalby see it as you doing them a favor.

7. I'd just go ask what they'd take for them
If they hesitate on giving them away for free, start bidding at 20 bucks and raise at ten dollar increments. :D

10. I only collect bricks
Edited on Sat Oct-28-06 07:09 PM by BrotherBuzz
I derive great pleasure in cleaning, stacking, sorting and admiring my bricks (every brick has a history, some greater then others). I have accumulated several thousand, but I always seem to putting off building the wall and paving the section of backyard. Maybe I should read a little Winston Churchill to become inspired because he was another mason who found great therapy in doing brickwork.

12. If you sing drunkenly under someone's window, bricks will be free.
But it would take a long time to accumulate enough, and your health insurance may not cover the hidden cost of collection.
