I'm a "Bleeping Useless Socialist", according to freeper family member
Christmas night I made it to my dad's family Christmas gathering, despite some nasty weather during my drive from Cleveland to Toledo. Since my grandparents are both gone now and the family home was sold, we don't get together nearly as much anymore and we were all enjoying ourselves since a lot of my cousins were able to make it as well.

Well, it was at the house of my aunt, my dad's sister, who had remarried a few years ago after eleven years of widowhood. She married a widow, a retired doctor who was very well-off and who has a mansion-like home. To say that he's a repuke freeper doesn't quite do him justice. He got along great with my dad until the whole 2000 election fiasco, my dad is on our side, believing that Shrub blatantly stole the election and that he's not the legitimate president. You can imagine how that went over with the freeper repuke doctor.

I once asked him what his daughter had gotten her master's degree in (he has five grown children), and he said, and I quote, "Tree-hugging granola-crunching 101, or some such shit like that." As you can easily imagine, I'm glad I don't have to see him that often, as much as I love my aunt.

Well, I had the misfortune of being in the same room as him when he started bitching about how much vacation time is mandated in Germany and France, and how "socialism" was destroying those countries and it couldn't come soon enough for him. So I made the mistake of joining in and calmly saying that, in countries where five weeks or more of vacation is mandated, their worker productivity and morale is so much higher. Most people were lucky to get even one week of vacation, if any, in this country, I continued. Well, maybe that's why we're doing so well economically now, he said, I kid you not, in all seriousness.

Well, yeah, if you're a retired doctor worth a few million dollars with a million-dollar house, I suppose that's true. Again, I was very calm as I talked about the three million jobs lost just in the past two years and how those jobs are likely never coming back, about the financial difficulty my own boss, a small business owner, was currently dealing with, and then talked about all the outsourcing corporations are doing now and are planning to continue, costing hundreds of thousands more jobs just in the middle class. He casually dismissed that, saying people will always find work if they really want it and it wasn't his problem at all. I could sense a couple of my laid-off relatives starting to get warm, and so could my dad and stepmom as they quickly tried to change the subject. But then he said, well, then, just move to Canada if you don't like it, they are (dripping with sarcasm here) doing so much better than we are economically, aren't they? Actually, they are, I said, in many areas they're doing a lot better. My stepmom nodded her head in agreement. Then he said, well, you must be reading different sources than me. No fucking kidding, I thought. I'll bet you're reading that leftist un-American socialist garbage like The Nation and shit like that, aren't you, he said. Figures, since you're a goddamn useless socialist.

Well, at that, I very calmly stood up, saying I needed to check on my son and see how he was doing. My dad and stepmom didn't say anything after we left, even though I know they've had similar conversations with him. But thank God most of the rest of my family isn't like that!!! Do you think I'll still be on his Christmas list next year?

5. LOL!
I thought about getting into that, since he started going on and on about why Canadian doctors were coming over here but no American doctors were going to Canada, and we had the best health care in the world, and it was people's own fault if they couldn't afford it, and if they couldn't pay for it, tough shit, and the free market was the best thing for medicine, etc., etc. blahblahblah. Well, as most of you know, universal health care and reforming this country's fucked-up health care system is one of my main priorities in life, so that shit did NOT go over well. Fortunately, I left to check on my son (supposedly, lol)! before I got too hot.

26. Pointout that he made his money off health-care reimbursements
that were originally negotiated by unions and now provide some people with the opportunity to have health care.

I know he won't like to hear it, neither does my dad (retired surgeon), but tough! I worked in my dad's office in the summers typing and filing insurance company claims and nearly all of his surgeries were on people with the two largest employers in town who all had insurance that paid for their surgery. Since most were factory workers they could not have paid for the surgery or the hospital care if it weren't for the insurance - and Dad wouldn't have had the opportunity to earn a living and raise a family if no one could pay.

His father was a doctor and they nearly didn't make it during the Depression because no one could pay.

things got so hot so quickly that I didn't get the opportunity to bring it up. BTW, I'm surprised that your dad feels that way if his own father had a hard time during the Depression.

6. That's the problem with us historians
We actually know too damned much about this sorry world we live in and how it got to be the way it is. People like that won't understand until the masses start beating down the walls to their gated communities. Unfortunately for all of us, that's precisely what history would predict we're headed for.

9. I know, sometimes I wish I didn't know
nearly as much as I do, because I see the same things happening in history over and over, and I see the cliff we're headed for and about to go over. But I can't get anyone to pay any attention, except on DU, and everyone here already knows! Sometimes I understand just what the phrase "Ignorance is Bliss" means.

8. Just curious, what kind of doctor was he?
I would just assume it was something along the lines of:

a) Non-required plastic surgery
b) Organ transplantation
c) Non-required dermatology

These three categories pay HUGE, and you never have to deal with icky poor people.

11. Ask him why * takes more vacation than 5 weeks per year.
That must surely tick him off that the Shrubster takes that much vacation time.

I suppose that since it's not mandated, that's a different story? I, however, do not appreciate paying the salary of somebody who needs that much vacation time just to cope with the job he's supposed to be doing.

24. Actually, out of necessity, I've been learning
this past year how to stay calm but argue effectively, whereas before I simply would have either kept my mouth shut and left the room before my heart exploded from my ever-rising blood pressure, or just left the situation. But we have to learn how to handle people like this and talk calmly but firmly with them, otherwise they're just going to keep getting away with their shit.

It's hard to come out to the world and find out the truth of the matter. I married into doctors family...only to find they are the most stupidly patriarchal, bigoted and hateful family...so that is why I am alone with kids this year. Enough of all this crazy stuff...in my family and in society. Time to evolve. I have to look at all the opportunities I get to learn how to discuss hot topic issues with people and really grow with them. Those pundits are just sickening. How such hateful people can live with themselves...its a shame.

Even more appalling are those who may not have had the familial financial backing, but somewhere along the way got "mentored." Oh their tales of SELF-MADISM, completely ignoring those who smoothed their paths. I was once asked by a dear friend who was really supportive in a time of great need, "When are you going to get off friendly welfare?" He then declared that I wouldn't even get $50 at a garage sale for my instrument and should give it up. Never mind he was only able to help me because George owned the Playboy building, took a shine to him and HIS talents and introduced him to many well-heeled clients...

72. I would have walked out.
But you were the bigger person and respected that you were a guest. Can't say much for the host.

I don't bring up politics except with my lefty parents. My other half tends to open his trap sometimes a bit too much. Like in cabs in Vegas after a few cocktails. Ohe!! I used to think I was the one with the big yap!

54. Geez, and I thought MY family was bad!
I'm sorry to hear you had to put up with that, but it sounds like you were successful in not blowing up. I'm having to learn which battles to fight and which ones to let go. Luckily, I'm not around my mom, dad and brother very often (they're all fundie dittoheads) and I've come to the conclusion that I'm not going to change their minds and instead of wasting my time on them, I focus my energy elsewhere.

I am so happy to have DU to turn to so I know I'm not alone in these types of experiences.

57. Imagine my horror at seeing that sh*t from a DUer.
Just a couple days ago I saw that same crap coming out of DUer here in the lounge in a thread about a labor issue (strike.) It was ALL I could do not to jump in and turn it into a huge smackdown...

I dunno who it was--I refuse to remember--but when I saw the dreaded "we don't need your kind..." start flying about Socialism, it really pissed me off to no end. Last I saw, Martin Schreader had decided to leave over it.

I figure I've put my time into the local Dem party, and I've put my time into being a productive citizen. I don't need to get that here.

As for the nasty rat-bastard Uncle in Law, we don't get to choose our family, unfortunately. I'm like you, I'd have had to say something, and I'd have had to get away too. Seems to me, you can argue reality with some folks till you drop over dead and you still can't turn the lights on for them.

If I might suggest, next year, whey not send him a collection of Eugene Debs' writings next year for Christmas? You may want to include a bottle of smelling salts along with it. ;)

61. I won't link to the post, but this was said:
" Last I checked this was...

the DEMOCRATIC Underground. I'm glad to see the tent is big enough to include the Socialist Party.... not. I see no benefit to the Democratic Party being associated with socialists."

Here is a link to the thread--read it and decide for yourself:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=571986

I'm not trying to stir up stuff--but THIS is the kind of stuff we all are facing. You are correct that not everyone here is carrying that attitude--but it IS here.

It isn't too shocking to see it coming from the right wingers, like the nasty Uncle. I almost expect it. It is, however, a real issue to me when I see it here in the so-called "left".

64. It is, indeed, very discouraging
to encounter that kind of attitude on DU, of all places! Fortunately, though, it seems that it's not that prevalent and that most DUers try to set those people straight.

Nice home, gets several weeks off for vacation per year, and as she's about to have a baby, will get three years of unpaid maternity leave and her job guaranteed to be there when she returns. Sounds like a good deal to me.

78. I must have a weird family!
I have freeper types as well as progressives who are closely related to me. We don't discuss politics at family gatherings since we're too busy catching up on what's going on with all of us. It's not even that we've all agreed to make politics off limits, we just have so much else to talk about.

I think it's funny that people use that word without any idea of what it means. As if being one is somehow an insult.

I've heard that. My answer has been, "No, actually i'm a graduate school educated capitalist. Would you like to discuss the differences in what you think i think and what i really think? Never mind, you'd never comprehend what i know."

71. What a CHARMING host.
Luckly I spent the holidays with my left wing parents. (former Repugs and now fire breathing liberals)

But next year may not be so fortunate. Since the past three years Christmas has been in the middle of the week, Mom and Step-Pappy have come down here. Next year it will fall on a Saturday and we will go up to my parents place. I have one member of my family that likes to "bait" my step-dad on things political (he's right winger), but my step dad stops him in his tracks QUICK! Considering what happens in the '04 election, things might get a bit ugly.

O' the holidays!

77. You're a better woman than I
>Figures, since you're a goddamn useless socialist.<

I appreciate your calmness and kindness towards this person, but I, relatives, Christmas or not, would have picked up my purse, gathered my things, and excused myself. Permanently.

The best gift DH and I have ever given each other is to NOT spend holidays with either of our families. Holidays on both sides are superseded by the inevitable dramas, and we finally had our fill.

After a crack like that, I think my response would have been a letter to him and to your aunt, calmly stating that you wish them no ill, but you can't be around anyone who thinks that insulting a loved one with anything approaching the above language is anywhere near appropriate. An apology is the least he owes you, and I don't give a damn if it was his house or not. He's in the wrong.

If worst came to worst, I'd schedule an alternate family gathering during the holidays at another location, even if it's a restaurant. I wouldn't invite him.

IMHO,
Julie

80. There's only one real way to deal with it
Egg him on.

Get him real worked up with some of that righteous Rectal Rightist Republican Rage.

Lead him to rant on as many subjects as possible. Also, if possible, and you "know how to take care of yourself", see if you can't get him to take a swing at you. Don't let him connect, but don't hit back, either.

I mean, hit as many of his "hot buttons" as you can. For instance, once you've got him ranting about Socialism, mention how wonderful Hillary is.

Everyone in the family will see what a little man he is. And once he's back home and cools down, he will see it, too.

Never underestimate the persuasive power of allowing a person to humiliate himself in public, and then to bear his well-earned shame.
