...but IMO trying to avoid needlessly pissing people off ain't necessarily a bad thing.

I had to mention it, not for the sake of getting everyone to be politically correct, but because I believe that as proud liberals we (generally speaking) hold ourselves to higher standards than the ordinary shlub in certain ways.
