Johnny Cash fans check in.
I received "The Essential Johnny Cash 1955 - 1988" from my sister for Christmas and it kicks ass. Can I get a "hell ya!" from any other fans of the man in black out there?

2. hi Redneck Socialist
One of the very best concerts I ever saw was Johnny Cash - playing in Reno,NV. Our funky radio station out there played "Folsom Prison Blues" about 5 times a day, the week prior to the show.

3. I saw him a few years back at meadow brook farm.
I'm glad I had the chance to see him. I'm a big fan of his more recent CDs and only recently have begun to listen to his older stuff.

8. Just around the corner there's heartache...

Down the street that losers use
If you can wade in through the teardrops
You'll find me at the Home of the Blues

I walk and cry while my heartbeat
Keeps time with the drag of my shoes
The sun never shines through this window of mine
It's dark at the Home of the Blues

Oh, but the place is filled with the sweetest mem'ries
Mem'ries so sweet that I cry
Dreams that I've had left me feeling so bad
I just want to give up and lay down and die

So if you've just lost your sweetheart
And it seems there's no good way to choose
Come along with me, misery loves company
You're welcome at the Home of the Blues

Just around the corner there's heartache
Down the street that losers use
If you can wade in through the teardrops
You'll find me at the Home of the Blues
Yeah, you're gonna find me at the Home of the Blues

I'll bet that collection kicks ass from start to finish!

9. Not a big fan
But "Hurt" just kills me every time I hear it, I'm listening to it right now and it still moves me, even though I've heard it dozens of times now.

20. CMT (Cable) re-ran the Johnny Cash memorial....
Over the holiday "weekend". It was the 2.5 hour long show in the Ryman Auditorium presented by Johnny's family, featuring words & music by his family & friends. Production values were good but simple; the only "Red White & Blue" was on Willy's guitar strap.

"Performers also included Larry Gatlin, Jack Clement, Johnny Western, Jimmy Tittle, Sheryl Crow, Cash's daughter-in-law Laura Cash, Steve Earle, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, Marshall Grant, Travis Tritt, John Mellencamp, Rodney Crowell, Marty Stuart, Kid Rock, and Randy Scruggs. Those sending tribute video statements included Bono, Dan Rather, Ray Charles, Whoopi Goldberg, the Rev. Billy Graham and Trent Reznor.

"At a party for members of the Cash and Carter families prior to the concert, former vice president Al Gore remembered Cash as a 'good friend' and a 'great, great man.' Gore recalled his time with Cash fondly. 'We had so many talks about things he cared about deeply. He was politically active, he testified before state legislatures on prison reform and he campaigned for the rights of Native Americans and he was real progressive,' said Gore. 'He didn't think the most important thing was to get more money for rich people. He cared about the poor and the downtrodden. I was honored by the family's request that I be a part of this tonight, and I asked if I could read the lyrics to Man in Black because that's where he explains his political convictions and what he cared about.'"

(Noted: Kid Rock was actually GOOD--he did a simple, acoustic version of "The Voice of Youth".)

The host for the show was Tim Robbins; he'd worked with Johnny & they became friends. This fact hacked off a few wingnuts over at the CMT.COM message boards but the majority of fans thought the show was mighty fine. In fact, they said they'd be glad to buy a DVD or tape of the show if it became available. (I surely would.)

21. Right here
Big-time Johnny Cash fan here. The Folsom Prison album is one of the great anti-establishment statements ever to come out of country music.
