1. I did watch it.
It's still the best beginning cinematography-wise of any movie with them panning over the Alps.

I'm still surprised they didn't haul the nuns away for aiding and abetting, but then again we don't know, "the rest of the story".

3. The rest of the story.......

I never tire of that movie and have been in serious love with Christopher Plummer from my first screening. There is a fairly new book out by Agathe von Trapp (the eldest daughter's real name...not Liesel) that tells the real story and is supposed to have great pictures. Agathe actually was not the oldest either...she had an older brother. And sorry, but there was no boyfriend named Rolf. In fact she confesses she had no boyfriends at all. The book title is: Agathe von Trapp: Memories Before and After The Sound of Music . Maria also wrote a couple of books, and I think some of the information in each is contradictory to the other, so it's probably good to have the book by Agathe for balance.

I haven't yet read the book, but have gleaned a bit of information from reviews.
The original von Trapps (prior to Captain von Trapp's second marriage to Maria)were aristocrats to be sure, but were already well known for their music.
And Capt. Georg von Trapp was not the cold and remote father the movie depicted him as, although when the Austrian navy was dismantled (due to that country's break with Hungary and it's coastal access), he was indeed lost for how to be in the civilian world. The loss of his wife was devastating, coming at about the same time. And they didn't actually climb over the Alps, but escaped via train. Here are a few pictures, and their music can be sampled on Amazon if you want to hear the real deal:

7. Another thing
The Barons marriage to Maria happened several years before he was called to serve the third reicht as an officer in the navy.

10. The real story of the von Trapps
is much more interesting than the movie, much as I love the movie.

Maria was something of a control freak, to put it mildly, and prevented the children from having lives of their own for years and years. They did a great deal of physical labor on the place in Vermont, along with touring the country with their act. At least one of the kids finally ran away to have a life of her own.

She wrote at least two memoirs of her life, and they make for very interesting reading.

4. have you been to a sing-a-long?
They play the sound of music at a local theater each year. We all dress up in different parts. I was rolf once.and we get a set of props that we pull out at opportune times in the movie. Like edelweiss, mittens, puppeta, etc. And we all sing along. Its a blast!. At the end, we have a contest to see who has the best costume. Last year A HEATHEN won. Mary Poppins!

6. I "heard" it was on
:lol

I've seen it so many times, but never tire of it. The love scene in the garden always cracks me up ...he professes his love and she breaks into song!

11. Hee Hee
I ran across it last night. But for the first time ever, I bypassed it for my new Chocolat DVD that I got for christmas. :D Ah, I still have old loves, but now make room for a new one!

Another little movie factoid worth noting:

The end of the movie shows them supposedly walking out of Austria into Switzerland, right? No, walking that way takes them back into Germany! :P
