I've never really talked politics with any of them, and that was a conscious decision. I figure, as a progressive, it's probably not a good idea to talk politics with anyone who romanticizes the ultra-conservative 1950s as some golden age of American history.

Fortunately, I have an intense passion for '50s rock 'n' roll, so finding non-political stuff to discuss with those folks is never a problem!

13. What's funny

Is either Dale Jr. or one of his crew made a comment less than celebratory about our Fearless Leader (I remember thinking he's going to get crucified for saying it) but it went without comment.

His stepmom might be a friend of the Bushies, but Dale Jr. doesn't seem to be. Then again, all his stepmom did was get Jebbie to make sure that Dale Sr's autopsy photos didn't get splashed around the net so I don't know how friendly that makes them.

Guess the freeps think anyone who visits the White house from 2001 to 2004 is a pubbie.

As are most conservatives, libertarians, greens, and whatever else you want to throw in there. There are always exceptions, of course, and I know some people right here on DU represent beautiful, inspiring, shining examples of those exceptions. But in the mass, precious few of the nearly three hundred millions of us live up to the ideals of the Revolution, or merit the blood that was spilled for us at Bunker Hill and Gettysburg. it's not like there aren't ANY other liberals out there.it's a "traditional" rod and custom board,so we have guys from canada,NZ,australia,japan,germany,spain,france,switzerland,sweden,norway,england and ireland,probably a few others i've forgotten.they know what's going on in this country,a few of them have mentioned it.i doubt i'll be banned,but i'll probably get an email spouting a bunch of right wing drivel about what a "traitor" i am.

Next time someone condemns you for your politics, tell him that liberal Democrats like you made hot rods and customizable cars built! Unions worked hard to make production lines efficient, and cars high quality.

Many of the great designers of the era were Democrats.

Lee Iacocca, who gave the world the Mustang and helped save Chrysler from oblivion (so it could rise again to provide the world with the Hemi crate engine -- the most awesome engine in a box you can buy) was a liberal Democrat and is still doing innovative things today in retirement (including digital battery-assisted bikes). He gives large amounts of time and effort to big charities. And don't forget the woody cruisers and retro-style production rods that Chrysler has cranked out since -- the PT, the V-10, the Omni GLH and last (and LEAST!) the woody K-car wagon! ;-)

If you want to add "insult" to "injury," you might want to inform him that Ford's present chief accounting officer called out of retirement to help save Ford is gay and a Democrat. Make sure he knows that if you took away the "liberals" from the Hot Rod and custom scene, he'd be buzzing around in a modified AMC Metropolitan with a 2.0 litre four. :-)

16. Let's not start dissin' AMC here!

My family had tons of AMC cars during my childhood. They are much maligned, but they were way cool at the time. We had two Gremlins (one was the X with the Levi Strauss interior!), an AMX Javelin, a Matador, a Concord, and an Eagle 4x4 wagon. My fist car was a $600 government surplus Concord wagon (in "American Racing Green") which ran for years with over 300,000 Kms on the (broken) odometer.

I wish we still had the Javelin!

19. Hot-rodders are nothing...You ought to see what Ham Radio is like...

At least your average motor-head doesn't go around all the time "preparing for the BIGGUN"...Some of these radio guys are frustrated cops/emt/first-responders. Either couldn't make the physical or the PSYCH standards, so they get their radio, their EMCOM certificate, and Voila! a "Radio FIRST RESPONDER"!

Rush Limbaugh is their god and Morse Code is a commie plot to keep them off the airwaves...

I have been a Ham for over 35 years. I don't get on the air anymore because:
A.Tuning across the state-side bands is like listening to a Mike Savage/Weiner-Art Bell audition.

B. I'm embarrassed to talk to foreign Hams.

I'm glad a lot of cyclists are still liberal.
