My sump pump is making a lot of noise

My husband left on business again and I know nothing about sump pumps except that they keep the basement from flooding. We rent our duplex, but I'd rather not call the land lord if I don't have to. Today is a warmer day and a lot of snow and ice are melting. I have never heard it this loud though. I can hear it from upstairs. I tried pouring water into it and it drained. It looks like it is muddy. I don't know if there is a blockage somewhere. Does anyone know anything about sump pumps? I am sort of concerned.

1. Well, if you poured water in it...

...and now the water is gone, I wouldn't sweat it. Since you said the water was muddy, it probably sucked a little pebble or something and that's what's making the racket.

If it stops pumping and there's six inches of water in the basement, now THAT's a problem.

Your husband can take it apart and clean out the pump and the strainer when he gets home, I betcha.

2. I have found that turning the radio up usually helps...

I use this repair method on my car all the time.

Be careful messing with noisy sump pump and water and electricity.. Call landlord.
