Why are people scared to say "God"?
I mean it! I had a teacher this year that was terrified for anyone to say the "G" word anywhere on campus since we became a University! He even got on to an atheist for saying "good God!" about something going wrong in editing. People say stuff like that all the time. We hear stuff like ____ goddess or _____ Buddha, even a _____ Allah once in a while! So why jump up and scold a _____ god?

13. Heh, I go to a Catholic school

...we swear like a bunch of drunken truckers from NJ :D
On edit: is it wrong of me to find it simply hillarious that hard core catholics curse god out regularly and then go to Mass?

15. i love it
it's that familiarity thing -- god is more like a family member, i think. but it's some of the more creative cursing you'l ever hear.
i wasn't raised catholic so i don't have it -- but i've dated some -- sshh don't tell anybody priests -- and they have some of the best creative cursing i've ever heard.

21. Most good Catholics favorite cuss word is "Jesus Christ"
or "Jesus, Mary and Joseph". My hubby gives the Lord middle names like "Jesus H. Christ" and "Jesus F***ing Christ". That's what eight years of Catholic school will do to you!

2. political correctness.
Edited on Mon Dec-29-03 03:36 AM by LastKnight
it sucks but its the way of things now. in certian public schools certian religion discussions are only permitted when waivers have been signed. (i.e. evolution vs creation) sad thing that people are that easily offended.

so to this i say...

good god people, lighten up, and god bless

3. I've never heard about that before.

Maybe it's because he thinks the word "God" alienates the "higher powers" of other cultures' religions?

And not just him! One of the bard of Gov. was wanting to know if that had to make some of the nuns on campus take off their habbits!

7. Thats what we the students have be saying!
But the higher powers (board of Gov.) think it's important!Which is funny since that do not want to change the wording of the Non-discrimination code to include sexual preference as something not to discriminate.

4. Teacher was a nervous nellie.
God. God. God beknighted. Goddamn. Godawful.

Personally, I would applaud a teacher who encouraged euphemisms as a way to get students to consciously explore the uses of language to confuse, evade, and otherwise deceive in plain sight.

Gosh! Golly! Goodness! Great Caesar's Ghost! Jumping Jehosephat!

11. are you thinking of...?
"thou shalt not use the lord's name in vain"?-- i think thats the phrasing of it.

not too knoweldgable on the commandments, but i know its one of em lol. a 'vain' reference would be open to interpretation, if it were in a theology discussion id say nothing wrong with it and thats what teachers are afraid of even in some cases.

12. That reminds me of "Life of Brian"

Jehovah! Jehovah!

I think the teacher is afraid of getting stoned. But since I'm sure I'll be stoned. God! God! God!

14. "since we became a university"?
i'm just guessing here; but, does that mean, "since we now get federal funding that might be recinded if we continue to act as a religious institution", perhaps?

16. about the whole g-d thing
You will notice ppl dont want to say god instead uses g-d.

Now please this is not a bash against jews bear with me.

I find most ppl using this are newlydiscovered rightwing jews who doesn't have a clue what it takes to be a jew except saying shalom in a chatroom and saying g-d instead of god.

Now this extremely interesting phenomena has carried over to the rightwing christians too since they have discovered that after hundreds of years of hating jews, they are suddenly the jews best friends since in THEIR opinion israel is "anti -arab" and are gods chosen ppl. Anyway these rightwing lunatic christians have ALSO begun to say g-d instead of God.

This is imo pretty stupid and an israeli friend told me it's really jehovah you aren't supposed to say.. not god..

17. G-d: 2004 primaries
an israeli friend told me it's really jehovah you aren't supposed to say

The idea is never to spell as much G-d as you can r--d. It's old world superstition about not looking a gift horse in the mouth. The neos are part revivalist, but a lot of their neuroticism was learned at an early age.

I find most ppl using this are newlydiscovered rightwing jews

It's a little bit like abbreviating Bush with *, warding off the evil eye with a short secret name. My great-grandparents signed their name on checks as an X, for fear of the czar or plain illiteracy.

most ppl using this are newlydiscovered rightwing jews who doesn't have a clue what it takes to be a jew except saying shalom in a chatroom

Shalom y'all, to paraphrase Kinky Friedman.

18. I am an atheist
and I say things like "oh god I don't want to do that" and "goddamn" and plenty of others things with "god." It is more like an expletive than anything else.

20. I'm an atheist, too.
But I avoid using the word god, because I don't want to acknowledge something that I don't believe in. For instance, instead of god-damn it, I just say damn it.

19. I'm not.
As an elementary school teacher, I do my best not to bring gods of any kind up in the classroom. That's career suicide. It's also a gesture of respect; to allow parents to decide what to say about god, or not. If I were going to discuss god in an elementary school classroom, I don't see how I could do that without debunking someone's religious teachings. And young kids believe what their church has taught them. It would not be right to put them in conflict in the classroom.

Outside of my classroom, I'll say "god" as much as I want. Which doesn't mean, in context, it's the same "god" other people may assign the name.
