I cooked three pumpkin pies last night that I meant to take to a homeless shelter today. ginbarn had the bright idea of giving one of the pies to one of our neighbors. No problem there - I have plenty of ingredients for making more pies.
When Diane (not her real name) received the pie, she was very appreciative - and then told us that we must have known she didn't have anything in the house to eat. Then she burst into tears.
Diane is unable to work due to ongoing health problems. She is on a constant regimen of pain medications which are all the more difficult to pay for if you have neither job nor insurance. The finance company is threatening to repossess her car. She has even been forced to steal pet food just to take care of her critters. On top of all this, Diane has just taken in a neighbor who has been kicked out of her old place by her former roommate.
That little pumpkin pie was a godsend for Diane. But ginbarn wanted to make sure that she had a proper Thanksgiving meal, not just dessert. So we went to the supermarket and loaded up on stuff for Diane and her new roommate to enjoy today. They were both overcome with gratitude by our gesture.
So it turns out that a pie that originally was going to feed the homeless went instead to lift the spirits of someone who's dangerously close to being homeless herself.
Life just works out that way sometimes.
