Reprieve What brought me to rest was your body.
Louise Gluck: "The Swimmer"I will deny everything
you think you gave me, except
the fact nothing ever got my attention
like your body
which I remember like a Russian novel:
when I read it, I felt it
but later could not imagine such things
happening to anyone.
It was not obsession
because it took too many years
and sex was only its form.
it was more like those irises
in my dream I blithely picked
to enter in the country fair.
I knew I would win.
And urgency: bcause we had so much of it,
there was none of it.
Those who say
you simply wore me out
forget how much fatigue and peace
resemble each other.
Think of the freedom weariness offers.
Oh, the things I have said
when I was tired.
After you left, someone told me
I looked confused.
For the first time, I had the confidence
to appear bewildered,
and those who consider stillness
a giving in cannot know
this ecstasy: the knowledge
I will never allow myself
to be hurried again.
