AAAGGGGHH!!! there is *something* beeping in my condo
It sounds like a smoke detector with dying batteries and it has been going on for several days now. It beeps approximately every 30 seconds. I can hear it most distinctly in the upstairs hall of our little townhouse and hardly at all in the surrounding rooms. There is a smoke detector there but it's electric, and the noise is not really coming from it. when I stand on the stairway, I just cannot pinpoint the direction the sound is coming from--it seems to come from the front if I'm down a ways, and from the back if I move up. This is really getting me on edge. I keep trying to figure out where it is coming from and now I am getting paranoid about bugs, hidden cameras, etc. MAYBE it is coming from the adjacent neighbor's upstairs hall--that is all I can think--but it doesn't really sound muffled by a wall or anything.

1. Silly question, but....
Is there any chance you have an old battery-operated smoke detector stored away somewhere? I had the same thing happen to me, and I finally found an old smoke detector on the top shelf of a bookcase. We had forgotten to remove the battery and it kept beeping. It drove me absolutely insane until I finally found it.

5. ha ha, yes I've thought of that and have been listening in closets
but the sound is in the stairway and hall and not anywhere where things are stored.

2. there may be a backup battery in there that is dying
try removing the cover on the one in the area and see if that's it.

Good Luck.. that noise can drive one crazy

7. Do you have an attic or crawl space?
Maybe there is some alarm up there for the exhaust fans or something.

14. I bought an inexpensive watch once, and
left it in a suitcase once it was no longer needed (vacation, forgot my watch). It had bells and whistles and a calculator etc. Weeks later, the alarm started going off several times a day, and I hadn't programmed it to do that. Let us know what you find out. Maybe someone lost a watch in your home.

15. I think I figured it out--
I realized I could somewhat hear it out front--it must be my neighbor's security system. I don't have one of those so I didn't think of it. I think he's a student and is gone for the holidays. I will call the 800 number on the sign and ask them if it could be that.
