Poll question: Do you have a right to know who has you on Ignore?
Do you have a right to know who has you on Ignore? Since personal attacks are dealt with and unwanted IMs and Emails can be stopped, Why then have a Ignore-User feature? I thought Liberal meant open minded? I thought progressives were willing to listen to differing opinions?

Can you even see this poll? lol

3. Progressives are willing to listen to differing opinions, yes
But we are also willing to reject differing opinions after examining them ourselves.

Mostly I use ignore for rude people. I don't use it as much since we have "hide thread." It saves my sanity, but feel free not to use it.

8. People can say what they want--I don't have to listen
I only put people on ignore after they have repeatedly shown themselves to hold opinions I have rejected.

I seldom have more than one person on ignore at a time and they usually leave DU or get themselves banned shortly.

27. I don't see the point I guess
if someone were a total spamming jackass I would use it. If someone disagreed with me constantly I would jump back in and debate. I think its counterintuitive to the message board format to ignore.

If someone thinks they are doing a disservice to me by putting me on ignore, I can't describe how insignificant that is to me.

116. Debate v Discussion
I think its counterintuitive to the message board format to ignore.

Not really, not with 36000 or whatever it is we're up to for posters. I've been on usenet for 10 years, killfiling idiots is a good way to keep flame wars from expanding. Offline, who has the right to demand you listen to them? No one. And I've never ever ever seen a flame war get started by someone who *asked* for, or formally accepted, a debate.

Beyond that, here's something funny: today I added probably another 30 posters from the GD2004 board into my killfile. I can open certain threads about certain candidates and nearly half of the list will say "ignored."

You'd think there'd be a bunch "ignored" posts showing up in the Lounge, GD, and LBN. But nope. I've seen one ignored post in the lounge in the last 5 hours' worth of posts, and less than I can count on one hand in LBN & GD.

What do you make of that?

I don't.

As for "being liberal = open-minded" -- to an extent. But there is no right not to be offended; many posts are offensive, yes, even on DU, imagine that!, and if I want to avoid catching a snippet of something that might make me mad, putting someone on "ignore" is the easiest way to do it.

Cuts down on flame wars, too.

42. "freep this poll"
doesn't get across what I think of it.

I didn't mean to confuse you. I'll try to make it clearer.

Freepers largely see things in black & white, no? Many DUers do as well. A case on point was the recent discussion about obesity. A couple of folks seemed to be of the opinion that "if you're fat and there is no medical reason for it, then you should lose weight for your health, and if you can't lose weight you have no excuse."

That's just wrong in so many ways. This is an example of what I mean by others' refusal to accept that their reality may not fit with everyone else's. In other words: one person says to me "you have no excuse for not losing weight;" I reply "It is not that simple;" the other replies, "Yes, it is." Well, actually, it's not: my reality is different than that which the other person is trying to apply to me.

I guess I'm still not being very clear. Tell me if you understand what I'm trying to say.

43. Black and White mentality
I think I`m feeling you. That "Bill O`Rielly-I know everything-I`m Right and You are Wrong" attitude.

I think some is human nature, and some is brought on by years of know-it-alls on TV and Radio.

Nothing wrong with a strong opinion, per se. Not being open minded enough to even consider another opinion does not seem very Liberal or Progressive to me.

50. Bertha, you are so right about that obesity thread.
I ended up with three more people on ignore, because I just could not deal with their deliberate (in my mind) obtuseness when it came to the issue of perception v. reality. I've never had that many people on ignore before. I've since removed them from ignore because I'm masochistic I guess!

I'm not a big user of ignore, I usually just don't pay close attention to people who bother me. There is one poster in GD Chunky that I have on ignore, because I just don't like their views about a particular candidate at all. There is another one that is on ignore because of their views on our troops. Other than that, I try not to pay attention to those who irritate me.

To answer your question Lincoln, I do not believe I have the RIGHT to know who has me on ignore. This is a privately-owned site, I don't have to post here, I don't own it, all I have to do is obey the rules. If the admins can't or won't tell us who has us on ignore, that's not a problem with me.

If someone has me on ignore, I'd be curious as to why, because I tend to see myself as non-controversial, and maybe a little inane, but not ignore-worthy. Perception v. reality, maybe? :) But if I rub someone the wrong way and they choose to ignore me, that's their business.

Do you have a right to know it? Do I have to walk up to you at a party where I am studiously ignoring and avoiding you and say "Hey, jerkoff, I hate you, I hate what you stand for, I find your attitude terrible, offensive and overall repugnant and therefore I am ignoring you?"

Absolutely not. I use ignore quite a lot and it makes my time spent at DU a lot better. The last thing I need is some idiot trying to figur eout ways to harass me because I have him/her on ignore.

80. This is Michael's wife; I have over 40 on "ignore"
because they got on my nerves and annoyed me while I was trying to enjoy what's left of intelligent conversation on DU.

I could give a damn if they have me on "ignore" or not. In fact, I wish real life had an ignore feature.

89. Funny you should mention him...he was the first person I put on
my list.

Go to the 2004 Primary GD and read. I looked at it once about a week ago. Stupid. The entire thing.

I could give a shit what DUers think of Dean, Kerry...any of them. They aren't going to change my mind on who to vote for--and they have a ridiculous idea of the importance of internet bulletin boards on the outcome of elections.

Insane.

91. For the record..
I voted no, even though my post seems to allude to my having voted yes.

I simply *want* to know who has me on ignore. However, I also respect people wanting to hide in the security of anonymity that is easily done on the internet.

I'd rather not force people to fess up to something like that. It could make for a lot fighting.

101. A newbie..
but n00b is more of an online insult than just newbie.

A newbie is someone who has a legitimate reason for being the way they are, they don't know any better.

A n00b on the other hand is someone who makes newbie like mistakes or acts like a newbie, yet they act like they are 1337.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=noob

So my definition is a little off. :D

Thats how I use the term anyway. I call a newbie a newbie and a llama a n00b. (I can already see this leading to more questions. :D)

103. Cool site!
Once used by the hacker community as sort of a sub-culture language, ANYONE using this type of speak in the present day in age is either:

A) A clueless net newbie who somehow thinks its still "cool" to speak this way.

B) A veteren net user who uses it to parody the type of people mentioned in example A.
