Shopping carts

Why must people leave their shopping cart in the parking lot? And why does it bother me so much to see it? Really people, it only takes a minute out of your life to walk it over to where all the other carts are, some of you could might enjoy it. Yes, someone is getting paid to go through the parking lot to collect all the carts, but that same person is probably the one that isn't around to bag your junk you just bought, and now you want to complain about that.

I find it so funny when people park right next to a cart, end up dinging their door while getting out and then just push the cart out of the way, but walk to the store door, and get a new cart.

Just have always wanted to rage about that...thanks for listening.

2. I used to be one of those who left the carts

But my girlfriend has educated me so now I dutifully returns carts to the collection areas. What's another minute of your life to simply push a cart to where it belongs? I don't even think about it anymore. Hell, I'm old and I can change.

3. i always put my cart away and got onto

my sister for not doing it. She said she had gotten ised to not doing it because she has 3 small children and shops alone. She can't leave the children in the car to run a cart over to a certain spot.

Lazy still (she could lock the car), but at least a little explainable (except that she did it with me there too).

5. that's a pretty good excuse

except for when you're there. i guess it just becomes habit at some point. actually, i'm sure some of the employees enjoy getting them, it gets them outside for a little while, i wouldn't want to be stuck inside those stores all day.

6. Track the changing demographics at Whole Foods by cart return

When the closest WF in Chicago first opened, most of the shoppers appeared to be fairly alternative or crunchy in appearance (you know--pink hair, hoodies, birkenstocks, "War is Not the Answer" bumperstickers), and cart return was high. Now the store has changed its product line to more luxury items and high-priced prepared foods, and I'm seeing the Lexus sedans and Mercedes SUVs in the lot. I'm also seeing a lot more carts. Now Trader Joe's is the cart return winner.

i was actually at Trader Joes last night and i was shocked by how many left their carts behind. i still think in general you would be right though.

8. Saw something like that

I used to shop at Giant in McLean VA (or those outside the beltway McLean is VERY pricy, Jag and Rolls city). I saw people abandon their cart in the checkout aisle! They'd empty it on the checkout belt, then shove it backwards to leave it in the way of the next shopper. Plus I saw some very well-dressed folks stealing food, ie eating the food, especially at the hotbar.

9. This takes me back to my Walmart slave days.

An older worker got onto me once when I was struggling to corral a cart AFTER I had clocked out. As she correctly pointed out, workman's comp would not cover me if I was hurt while doing this, and I had no insurance at the time.

10. Bull malarkey (sp?)

After you clock out and are walking to your car, you are still covered on WC. Poor WalMart training if this is what she learned. You are even covered in a cross walk off the premises.

Bottom line: I was clocked out, and often encouraged/coerced to do things off the clock.
