Or what other delights are you supposed to eat to ensure a lucky and prosperous new year?

2. are you from VA too?
My parents and grandparents to the pea thing, and as I kid I loathed the things... still, I was required to eat at least one, for good luck or whatever...

aside from the fact that I don't believe in luck, it never worked anyway. I still had to eat a pea the next year

5. Black Eyed Peas are pennies & Collard or Turnip Greens are $$$$
That's why I eat a whole bunch.

Also put or replace a couple of Bay leaves in your wallet on 1/1 of every year. I swear it works!

8. black eyed peas and cabbage
Other people eat other greens but in our family it was cabbage. The parents were always careful to remind us that the Scots-Irish ancestry meant that we were not actually Irish, so I'm not sure what the cabbage is all about. But I'll keep doing it. I might not win the lottery but I seem to get the bills paid OK for someone with such a low income...knock on wood!

12. I do
I like to pour a can of black-eyed peas int oa bowl, undrained, and mix in a little bit of pork sausage. Then I sprinkle shredded cheese on top and heat in the microwave until the cheese is melted. It's almost like a soup. Makes a great breakfast!

16. In OK, as kids we were told to eat 12 black-eyed peas on New
Years Day to have good luck in the 12 months of the new year.

I always thought it was an Ozark folk tradition.

One year in IA, I tried to find canned black-eyed peas for New Years. I finally found some, but I think I went to 4+ grocery stores. It was definitely NOT an IA thing.

17. It's our annual Black Eyed Pea Open House!
My husband is from New Orleans and so we have interesting black eyed peas (with three kinds of sausage, garlic, tomatoes, spices, etc) and stewed tomatoes (with garlic and okra) and cornbread. He also brought the New Orleans New Year's Day open house tradition -- our place is open from noon until whenever and people drop in, eat peas, have champagne, etc. Baseball caps, sweatpants, and hangovers mandatory. I actually enjoy it a lot more than Christmas day.

18. I had a friend who put the black-eyed peas in a cake
and take the cake to a party. Lots of people don't like them. He put one pea in each cut before cooking. He never told the guests. He just insisted that, whether they liked it or not, that he wasn't taking a chance on the "luck of his friends."

He passed away a couple of years ago and I know his friends are really "unlucky" that he's not around anymore. He was a great guy.

So, I eat my every year. Always have, but now I eat them in honor of my bud.
