Internet explorer questions for computer folks..
From an old (mainframe) computer folk.
Windows 98 SE. I upgraded from Windows 95. It was a computer from work which was on a network. Also upgraded then to Explorer 6.0.

Upgrade OK for a while, but now in Internet Explorer my internet options are frozen, with message "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions on effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator".

I can go into the options under setting, but can't change home page, or security settings. I have tried reloading Windows 98 to no avail.

If offering any help assume a much less than intimate knowledge of getting around anything internal in the PC.

Thanks for any help, and happy New Year.

Sounds like somebody messed with your registry.

Select run from the startmenu and enter "regedit" in the dialog box.
In the explorer-like view go to
HKEY_USERS->Default->Software->Policies->Microsoft->Internet Explorer->Restrictions (or similiar). You might have to change default to your username, if you have multiple users set-up.
All entries should (AFAIK) have the value 0 (decimal, although it doesn't matter ;-)).

3. BACK UP THE REGISTRY BEFORE MESSING WITH IT
Making a mistake in regedit can be doom, be careful.

4. Networked eh?
I would be willing to bet that your problem is not having the rights to change what you want to change, ie, you don't have admin rights on that machine. Your typical networked office computer is pretty restricted, the end-user can't change much for obvious reasons.

Contact the network guru from work I'd say.
