Can someone lead me to a windows program

that I can record with...I am trying to go from my tape player into my computer. Will Adobe Premier work? :shrug:

BTW I am using the mic input to get the audio from the player to the computer.

1. not my forte, but...

won't it work if you just use the built-in Windows Recorder, which records the input as a .wav file? From that point, I think you could convert to whatever format you want.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this one. Won't be the first time. :)

CoolEdit is an inexpensive program to use for your dubs. If money is no object, try Sound Forge or WaveLab. A decent soundcard is nice as well.

5. Nothing so expensive is needed

Pinnacle Clean 4.01 does a great job of remastering audio. As I recall, it'll capture sound through your computer's sound card.

CoolEdit will capture sound, but isn't as useful for cleaning up audio but costs twice as much. :-( :eyes:

7. It depends what you want to do with the sound files recorded

If you have a Soundblaster card then there is a utility by Creative called "Creative Recorder" that just records from the line in jack on your sound card (probably works with other types of cards as well). The resulting file will be saved as a "wav" file.

If tape hiss is a concern and you'd like to burn numerous sound files to a C.D. then "Magix audio cleaning lab" works well. I'll find a link for you.

It's not freeware - 39.95 but it does work well.

I would use a splitter from your left and right line out on your tape deck (again if there is one). That will ensure a better signal to your laptop. The Magix software will get rid of the tape hiss.

Headphone hack on the tpe player is okay if the volume is set to a low level (you don't want to overload the circuit) but microphone-in on the laptop? If it's not a stereo microphone then you're SOL.

Ideally, and this has been said, is to have both computer and tape player have line-out and line-in jacks.

How old is the laptop? Most of them made over the last several years should have a line-in jack, but be very careful with the input volume from the tape player! If the volume is too low, you won't get enough of the actual music to make it worthwhile. If it's too high you might blow the line-in circuit.

Pinnacle Clean can still take care of the noise, but for digitizing music, it's best to use the best equipment possible with a clean connection between devices.

If you want to save as an MP3 file you need the LAME MP3 encoder library as well as the Audacity program. It is also dowloadable there.

BTW whoever said that using a line in input would give you better quality is right. The mic input will likely give you a bit of background noise. On a laptop though you may not have one. Good luck!

15. Oh one more thing

If you MUST use the mic input, be sure to turn it all the way down before feeding a signal in. The level from the tape deck is likely to be higher than a normal mic input would be. Turn it all the way down to start then raise it until it's at a level you like. That should help keep the noise down a bit as well.

about 7 months ago? I found that a bit confusing, though I was able to record.

I wanted to convert LPs and audiotapes to CDs through my computer. I wound up using Music Match Jukebox program.
