Who thinks THE KINKS were unjustly overshadowed by Beatles/Stones?
I think the Kinks are/were an excellent band. I have about 30-35 of their records. Even some of the stuff from the 80's was good. IMHO.

I don't think there ever would have been a Smiths/Morissey(sp) if the Kinks hadn't provided that groundwork. I'm speaking of vocal styles, of course.

Smiths didn't come to mind, but yeah, and SO many other great bands consider them an invaluable influence.

6. Remember 'shiny happy people' from R.E.M.?
R.E.M. is one of my favorite bands and I'll never forgive them for that hideous song!

7. kinks kinks kinks
& Ray overshadows Dave a little too... that sound Dave got out of the guitar early on.

as for Come Dancing, hell, McCartney churned out worse clunkers at times.

9. They were, and are the BEST!
"Celluloid Heroes" breaks my heart every time I hear it. I sometimes sing "She's Bought a hat like Princess Marina" while doing housework. Their rock opera was flawless! "The New Centurions" was my theme song for years! And these are their lesser known pieces-I omit the obvious classics except for one...."Lola"

In 1972 "Lola" helped me glimpse, at 18, that my homosexuality was not something to be ashamed of, something that must be constantly hidden. I'll love them forever for that.

10. i've always wanted to see their "SOAP OPERA"
on stage... and I knew a piano bar pianist who had a whole bunch of obscure Kinks tunes in his rep...

Ducks on the wall

My baby’s got the most deplorable taste,
But her biggest mistake
Is hanging over the fireplace.
She’s got ducks, ducks on the wall,
Ducks, ducks, hanging on the wall.

My lady’s got a sort of strange fascination,
An obsessive fixation
For cheap decorations
She’s got ducks, ducks on the wall.
Ducks, ducks, hanging on the wall.

Wo-wo-wo I love her so but if she doesn’t move the ducks,
I think my mind is gonna go.
Ducks ducks on the wall.
Ducks ducks, hanging on the wall.

I leave the office and I want to relax.
Don’t want to stare at a wall
And look at a duck that can’t quack.
I love you baby but I can’t fall
For those ducks on the wall.

I start to snuggle up and squeeze her so tight.
Then out of the corner of my eye
I see those ducks in flight.
I love you baby but I can’t ball
When I see those ducks on the wall.

Wo-wo-wo I can sit through your gossip and your soap opera shows,
But those ducks have got to go.
I love you baby but I can’t ball
When I see those ducks on the wall.
And when I went to a cocktail party
With the bores next door,
What was the first thing that I saw?
Ducks, ducks on the wall.
Ducks, ducks hanging on the wall.

My baby’s got the most deplorable taste,
But her biggest mistake
Is hanging over the fireplace.
She’s got ducks, ducks on the wall,
Ducks, ducks hanging on the wall.

I’ll sit and look at all the soap operas with her
I’ll play all the panel games and watch all the quiz shows,
But those ducks they’ve got to go,
Those ducks are getting up my nose.

If those ducks can fly, well so can i.
And if those ducks have got to stay
Then I’m going to fly away.
I love you baby but I can’t ball
When I see those ducks on the wall.

Ducks, ducks, ducks on the wall.
Ducks, ducks, ducks on the wall.
Oh those ducks on the wall are beginning to move
They’re talking to me
I’ve got to get away from those ducks.

15. OK, I'll bite
Personally, I think that by '67, the Kinks were the best band working. I'll take "Something Else", "Village Green" and "Arthur" over anything The Beatles and The Stones (esp. The Beatles) at that time. By the time of "The White Album", The Beatles were four solo artists who played backing band to one another. And it showed. "The White Album" is chock full of filler (just ask George Martin) and "Let It Be" was just about awful. Nobody could touch the Kinks from '67 to '70.

And yes, the Kinks were great into the '80s. "Give the People What They Want" is a terrific album.
