who actually have an old bell with which to *ring* in the new year.
I sling around my grandmother's old brass school marm bell every new year. It's a hoot.

2. Church bells ring on the hour |
|
So when the bell rings at midnight, it rings in the New year.
That's my guess as how it started.

3. They ring every 15 minutes here. |

We can hear church bells ringing in three surrounding villages. After a while, it becomes like living near the railroad tracks: ya barely hear it anymore.
:hi: Nicole! Happy New Year!

I bet that took some getting used to! I don't live close to a church now so I seldom hear church bells. I kind of miss them sometimes, they were a constant in the ever changing world I grew up in.
:hi: Happy New Year Heidi

4. Well, of late, they're trying to blow up the new year... |
|
:P Or at least that's what it sounds like. I have it on the very best authority that '07 is deathly afraid of fireworks, and isn't fond of humanity at all. Some way to greet the poor damn year.

to call friends and relatives all hours of the fucking night wishing them Happy New Year sometimes 4 or 5 times every hour on the hour as the time approaches in each part of America. That's probably why.
Well, that answers that question.
