5. Bet he's a long-time local SC surfer
We don't usually frequent Cowells (where this was taken, down by the wharf), but the waves were mushy on the East Side and my son and his friend wanted to try a new spot. Bet this guy is a regular there. I loved that he was surfing in a baseball cap, and his board looks well used.

11. I always bring out of state visitors to Santa Cruz to see surfers.
It's a rare day when there isn't at least one person out there trying to catch a wave. He looks like one of the regulars -- no fancy equipment, just the bare essentials like a wetsuit and a board.

I was in Pacific Grove when the storm blew in last week and the surf was ferocious ---didn't see anyone trying to surf it!

12. You're right, there are always surfers in the water
Even on a totally flat day, and even in the heaviest surf. My son is just learning, and he has surfed when it was like a lake (in Capitola), but that day he discovered that just floating on your board looking cute attracts...girl surfers!

We got the swells from the big storms too but of course I don't let him go out yet in the big stuff. He still got worked pretty hard at the more protected spots. I'm amazed at his tenacity, at age 10 and not even 70 pounds. He takes a beating and keeps going back for more. Guess he has the bug.
